With Netflix’s “The Sandman” wrapping up its second season, showrunner Allan Heinberg has discussed the prospect of Dream reappearing in James Gunn’s DC Universe. In a recent chat, the experienced screenwriter shared insights about the captivating conclusion of the Tom Sturridge-led series and hinted at the chances of seeing Jacob Anderson’s portrayal of Dream in the DCU.
Allan Heinberg on whether The Sandman Season 2’s Jacob Anderson will return in DCU
In conversation with TV Insider, Heinberg expressed that initially, he didn’t envision The Sandman as part of the DC Universe, but he’s open to the idea of a future collaboration.
The Sandman writer clarified during a discussion about Jacob Anderson’s potential return as Daniel Hall in the DC Universe, “From the beginning, we initiated Sandman, and it was made clear that we are distinct from the DC Universe when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over. This independence enabled us to portray Joanna Constantine [Jenna Coleman], rather than John Constantine, giving us the freedom to create our own rules in relation to the DC Universe.
Although Heinberg appeared uncertain about Dream’s comeback, he acknowledged that the choice to involve characters from The Sandman, specifically Jacob Anderson as Daniel Hall and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, in future DC ventures ultimately lies with Gunn and Safran. “If there was a creative mind behind it, or if James or Peter desired a crossover of some sort, that would be pleasing to me. However, it would be their decision, not ours,” he clarified.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I found the final episode of The Sandman Season 2 deeply moving. In this climactic chapter, Tom Sturridge’s portrayal of Morpheus poignantly demonstrated his acceptance of the repercussions from slaying his son, Orpheus. In a selfless act, he chose to relinquish his own life, thereby paving the way for Daniel Hall to assume the mantle of Dream. With this decision, Morpheus’ narrative reached its poignant conclusion, leaving an indelible mark on me as a viewer.
