Ryan Murphy is planning a new romantic drama centered around the Kennedy family, but is once more encountering criticism from the families connected to the project.
Murphy has faced criticism from families connected to the individuals featured in his work, particularly during the premieres of both seasons of Netflix’s “Monster.” The initial backlash came from the families of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims, followed by more recent criticisms from the Menendez family.
Indeed, it’s fascinating to note that Jack Schlossberg, a relative of John F. Kennedy Jr., has voiced his observations on the forthcoming Murphy’s American Love Story anthology series.
The show, in turn, plans to narrate captivating love tales that swept the globe, starting with Season 1 delving into the romance between John F Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette.
In this series, the roles of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn are being played by Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon respectively. However, there’s an escalating online dispute between Schlossberg and Murphy, as Schlossberg disclosed that his family was never consulted during any stage of the production process.
Previously, Schlossberg shared on Instagram Stories his thoughts regarding the upcoming series about him: “I fervently hope that those responsible for this production give due consideration to the ideals he embodied throughout his life and the remarkable accomplishments he achieved. Furthermore, I encourage them to contribute a portion of their earnings towards the John F Kennedy Library.
To set the facts straight, I hold my uncle John in high regard. However, what I find unacceptable is exploiting that admiration in an excessive and distasteful manner for personal gain.
Afterward, during his appearance on the This Is Gavin Newsom podcast, Murphy referred back to Schlossberg’s remarks by stating that he found it somewhat surprising to be upset over a relative whom one hardly recalls.
The unexpected event for me was the intense backlash over the Kennedy saga, which I found peculiar given that no one had even read it yet. To me, it’s a heartfelt tale, a love story. It’s not meant to be critical or negative.
I didn’t fully believe it – after all, it came from a younger person. However, it’s worth noting that out of more than 88 films and TV shows about the Kennedys, none have ever been officially approved by the family. In fact, I had never considered that they would want to create something like this.

Currently, Schlossberg is using his social media platform to challenge Murphy directly, stating: “I invite you to repeat this in person,” followed by a recollection of personal memories: “My earliest recollections involve John referring to me as ‘Jackolatern’ and ‘the nudist’, often picking me up from school in his Pontiac convertible.
As a moviegoer recalling poignant moments, I can’t forget about standing as the ring bearer at his wedding, or the heart-wrenching day when he took his final bow. The melody of Wyclef [Jean] still lingers in my ears from the day we bid him farewell at his funeral.
He went on to say, “Many memories are shared through stories, such as the incident where he found himself locked out of his car in an intersection and asked the angry man nearby if he could borrow a golf club to break the window so he could retrieve his keys, which is exactly what he did.
You’re amassing vast wealth from John, yet you flaunt it publicly without giving back to the causes he advocated for or the public service he symbolized. This is quite inconsiderate, don’t you think?
Regardless of any issues raised by Schlossberg, the television series, American Love Story, will persist in its operation, aiming for a premiere in early 2026 on FX.
Alongside Kelly and Pidgeon taking prominent roles in the show, the ensemble also features Naomi Watts portraying Jackie O, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Sydney Lemmon playing Lauren Bessette, Alessandro Nivola depicting Calvin Klein, and Omari K Chancellor bringing Gordon Henderson to life.
The show’s focus will undoubtedly revolve around the romantic tale of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn, who tied the knot in 1996, and were widely regarded as a modern-day American royal couple. Their love story held the nation spellbound at that time.
The series will apparently follow the couple’s journey, starting with their initial encounter in 1992 and continuing up until their heartbreaking plane accident deaths in 1999.
