Rita Ora reveals she proposed to husband Taika Waititi and even got down on one knee during romantic Palm Springs getaway

Rita Ora shared that she asked her husband, Taika Waititi, for marriage while they were on a romantic getaway in Palm Springs. She broke with convention by proposing instead of him bending the knee.

In a candid conversation on Davina McCall’s Begin Again podcast, the 34-year-old singer revealed her unique approach to proposing to her 49-year-old filmmaker husband in 2022. She shared how she defied tradition and took control of the proposal instead.

She mentioned that she had completed the entire task. They were in a luxurious hotel room in Palm Springs, adorned with balloons and cake – something she absolutely cherishes.

I had the bands custom-made and intentionally kept them simple, not wanting anything flashy. When he asked, ‘What on earth is this? Is it Valentine’s Day?’ I replied with an embarrassed laugh, ‘Oh dear, if you don’t like them, I might have to remove my clothes.’

She concluded: ‘Anyway, I got down on one knee, and Taika absolutely loved it.’ 

Rita and Taika married in a private ceremony on August 4, 2022, in Los Angeles.

In 2021, after being friends for many years prior, the couple decided to get married within a span of only two weeks. They wanted to make sure that Taika’s daughters were able to attend the special event.

At the private ceremony, there were just eight attendees present. Among them were Rita’s sister, Elena, who escorted her during the procession, and Taika’s daughters, Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu and Matewa Kiritapu.

This year, Rita offered a unique perspective on her marriage with Taika during a captivating photo session for Hunger magazine, where she showcased her mesmerizing physique.

Expressing that their deep-rooted friendship serves as the cornerstone of their romantic bond, she shared with the press: “In essence, Taika and I are simply long-time best friends. We prefer to continue cherishing this aspect of our relationship forever, it seems.

In another part of the conversation, Rita mentioned her newest album titled “You & I,” explaining that her marriage to Taika, which she described as a significant move, played a role in its inspiration.

She expressed that it seemed crucial for her to be transparent… She aimed to acquaint others with her current state in life, as if sharing entries from her personal diary.

‘Music, for me, is about expressing oneself truthfully… The best you can offer is your own authenticity, and you can only pray that someone else will feel that connection or resonance.’

Before Taika, Rita romanced a string of big names, starting back in her pre-fame years.

Prior to attaining fame, Rita had a romance with Bruno Mars when she was 18 years old. She later recounted that their relationship was an immediate love connection.

In the year 2009, our paths crossed. At that time, I was an 18-year-old novice at Roc Nation, while Bruno, just like myself, was relatively unrecognized. He happened to be a songwriter trying his luck in the industry, assigned to compose songs for me.

‘I thought: ‘Wow, that’s just the world’s greatest guy!”

Following a brief stint with reality TV personality Rob Kardashian from October 2012, Bruno the singer called off their relationship after just two months. The reason for their separation was primarily due to Bruno’s demanding work commitments and their contrasting lifestyles not aligning well together.

Later on, she was involved with notable figures such as DJ Calvin Harris, musician Andrew Watt, and Ricky, the son of designer Tommy Hilfiger, in prominent relationships.

Apart from her main relationships, Rita has had brief romantic encounters with rappers like A$AP Rocky, actors such as Andrew Garfield, and musicians including Travis Barker.
