Project Hail Mary Video Game Officially in Development, Coming This Year

A new video game based on the popular sci-fi movie is coming soon, and it’s set to offer a completely unique experience for players.

Andy Weir, the author of Project Hail Mary, has revealed a new story set in the same universe as his popular novel and movie. This time, it’s a game called Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, and it will be a mixed-reality/virtual-reality experience. Amazon MGM Studios and Maze Theory are producing the game, and Weir himself is writing the story for it.

Andy Weir, the author, has shared that fans have been eager for more content since he created Project Hail Mary a few years ago. This new experience is the first expansion of the story beyond the book and film, and it’s designed specifically for mixed reality.

Project Hail Mary Game Coming This Year

Weir previewed early footage of the upcoming game with the directors of Project Hail Mary, Chris Miller and Phil Lord. The footage showed off details like the inside of the Hail Mary spaceship, Rocky’s living space, and how players will interact with Rocky – including fun moments like fist bumps and jazz hands.

Early looks at the Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars game show realistic starfields that surround players as they explore space. Instead of fully immersing you in the game world, it cleverly combines the game with your actual surroundings, making the experience feel surprisingly real and connected to your environment.

Andy Weir’s novel came out in 2021, and the rights to adapt it into a film were quickly acquired. The movie, directed by Lord and Miller and written by Drew Goddard, features Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, the only person left alive from a team sent on a critical mission to save the Sun.

On his spaceship, the Hail Mary, Grace is the sole human crew member. He quickly meets an alien—a stone-like creature he nicknames Rocky. Together, they investigate a danger threatening both their planets and try to find a way for both of their species to survive.

Released in theaters in March, Project Hail Mary has become a major box office success, earning over $573 million worldwide on a budget of around $200 million. Critics and audiences alike have praised the film, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 94% based on almost 400 reviews, and a “Verified Hot” rating of 96% from over 10,000 audience reviews.

The exciting game, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, will be released on most major metaverse and virtual reality platforms later in 2024.
