Viewers are really looking forward to Season 3. While they wait, many American fans are rewatching the first two seasons of the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. It’s currently back in the top 10 most-watched shows on HBO Max, at number eight.
It’s been almost two years since HBO last aired a new episode of House of the Dragon, back in August 2024. But fans won’t have to wait much longer, as HBO has announced the series will be back in June.
House of the Dragon Is Streaming Strong on HBO Max Ahead of Season 3
Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and roughly a century before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, House of the Dragon tells the story of the Targaryen family. The first season focused on the internal conflicts that divided them, and the second season depicted the buildup to and initial battles of an upcoming war. Season 3 will show the full-scale war erupting, with consequences as George R.R. Martin famously warned: “If you dance with dragons, you must expect to burn.”
The first spin-off series from HBO’s Game of Thrones is coming to an end, but the story isn’t over. A second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently being filmed, and plans for a Game of Thrones movie have been officially announced.
HBO has renewed both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for another three years, exciting fans of the Game of Thrones world. Francesca Orsi, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, stated that these shows demonstrate the depth and imagination of George R. R. Martin’s storytelling.
House of the Dragon is a Hit for HBO
George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal developed House of the Dragon for HBO. However, Martin became less involved after disagreements with Condal regarding changes made when adapting the story for television.
The cast of House of the Dragon is full of talented actors. Milly Alcock, known for her role in Supergirl, appeared in the first season. Season 2 features Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Ewan Mitchell, Stephen Toussaint, Matt Smith, Fabien Frankel, Rhys Ifans, Phia Saban, Matthew Needham, Ty Tennant, and Sonoya Mizuno.
The finale aired on HBO and its streaming service, HBO Max, and drew a record-breaking number of viewers for a single day. Because of its success, HBO quickly decided to continue the show for another season.
You can currently watch House of the Dragon on HBO Max, and the third season will begin airing on HBO in June.
