Fans will be excited to hear that Dragon Ball Super is coming back later this year, revisiting the original story arc involving Beerus, the God of Destruction, and his arrival on Earth. While the show’s return wasn’t unexpected, the decision to remake a story from 2013 surprised many viewers. With Toei Animation also planning a remake of Dragon Ball Super: Resurrection of F, it got us thinking about other popular anime series that could benefit from updated animation. We’ve chosen seven recent anime that experienced animation issues and would be perfect for a visual overhaul.
7.) Berserk

The 2016 anime series Berserk is well-known – and unfortunately, often criticized – within the anime community. It attempted to adapt story arcs from the manga that hadn’t been animated before, following the events of the Golden Age Arc, but only lasted for two seasons before moving away from the Band of the Hawk storyline. Many fans believe Berserk is long overdue for a reboot that truly captures the quality of the original manga. A major point of contention was the decision to use mostly computer-generated animation, as well as some questionable choices in how key scenes were presented. These two seasons contain important events and battles that deserve a fresh adaptation, especially now that the Golden Age Arc has already been covered by the classic 90s anime and the movie trilogy. Guts’ story deserves to be told for a new audience.
6.) Junji Ito’s Uzumaki

It’s a shame that Toonami’s adaptation of Uzumaki, the anime based on Junji Ito’s story about a town haunted by spirals, didn’t fully deliver on its promise. After a long and difficult production, fans were excited to finally see it on Adult Swim, and the first episode was excellent. Unfortunately, the remaining three episodes didn’t live up to the initial quality. Given that new adaptations of Junji Ito’s work are always appearing, a second attempt at Uzumaki by Warner Bros. seems unlikely, but this creepy and unique story deserves an adaptation that matches the brilliance of its premiere.
5.) Tokyo Ghoul

I’ve noticed a trend with anime adaptations – often, they finish before the original manga or light novel does. We’ve seen it with series like Fullmetal Alchemist and Hellsing, where the anime endings differed from the manga. But Tokyo Ghoul never got that chance. As of now, there haven’t been any plans for a new season, but fans are still really hoping for one. The original adaptation was done by Studio Pierrot, who also created Bleach and Naruto, and I think Kaneki’s story deserves a reboot with updated animation that really does the source material justice. It’s still a hugely popular series, and honestly, Tokyo Ghoul needs a revival.
4.) The Beginning After The End

I remember when The Beginning After The End first came out as an anime – it had a really rocky start! Everyone was so excited for it, but the animation quickly became a big point of contention. The reaction was so strong that fans actually started a petition on Change.org, hoping for a complete re-do. With so many similar ‘isekai’ stories out there now, it feels like Arthur Leywin’s story deserves another chance to really capture what fans loved about the original source material.
3.) The Seven Deadly Sins

The popular anime series The Seven Deadly Sins suffered from declining animation quality after a promising start, though it continued with movies and a sequel. Many fans believe later seasons didn’t live up to the original’s visual appeal, which first drew them to characters like Meliodas and his companions. A fresh reboot, following the events of Knights of the Apocalypse, could reintroduce the story to a new audience and recapture the initial excitement.
2.) Kengan Ashura

Okay, so this is just my opinion, but I really think Kengan Ashura deserves another look when it comes to animation. The Netflix series uses a lot of CG, and honestly, it doesn’t always flow super well. We got a sneak peek of how amazing it could look with the Baki Hanma Vs. Kengan Ashura special! Seeing the Kengan Ashura characters animated in the same style as Baki was incredible – it really showed how much better the fights could feel with a more traditional 2-D approach.
1.) One-Punch Man

Any anime fan likely knows about the issues with the second and third seasons of One-Punch Man. While the first season, animated by Studio Madhouse, is highly praised, many fans feel the newer seasons haven’t lived up to the original. Similar to the situation with The Seven Deadly Sins, a complete reboot isn’t necessary, but seasons two and three could really benefit from being remade.
