Okay, fellow Metro fans, get ready! It looks like Metro 2039 is finally happening! 4A Games just revealed the fourth game in the series, and I’ve gathered all the info you need – release date, what the gameplay will be like, how to pre-order, and everything else you can expect. Let’s dive in!
Similar to the game Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the creation of Metro 2039 has been affected by the war in Ukraine, and the events happening in real life are now influencing the game’s story.
It’s remarkable that Metro 2039 was even made, considering the circumstances. Luckily, 4A Games has offices in both Malta and Ukraine, which allowed them to keep working on the game even while the war impacted their team in Ukraine.
But for all things Metro 2039, read on!
When is the Metro 2039 release date?

The Metro 2039 release date is Winter 2026 according to developers 4A Games.
The game’s release date was announced at the same time as the game itself, but it surprised some people. It’s launching very soon after the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, which is scheduled to release in November.
As a big fan of both series, I wouldn’t be shocked if Metro 2039 got delayed a little bit – maybe a month or so – if GTA 6 completely takes over everyone’s attention when it launches. It just feels like Metro might need a bit more space to shine if GTA 6 is that huge.
Metro 2039 is planned for release on PC, but GTA 6 isn’t expected on PC for some time. However, because GTA 6 is so popular, many PC gamers might choose to play it on PlayStation or Xbox first.

Can I pre-order Metro 2039?

No, Metro 2029 is not currently available for pre-order.
Add the game to your wishlist on Steam, the Microsoft Store, or the PlayStation Store to get notified as soon as it’s released.
We haven’t heard anything yet about special or collector’s editions of the game. Previous games in the series have featured elaborate and highly sought-after collector’s editions, so it’s worth watching for announcements about those.
Once more information comes out, we will update you as soon as possible!
Which consoles and platforms can play Metro 2039?

Metro 2039 can be played on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The game is available for PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Since it hasn’t been announced for GOG, it likely includes DRM when it releases.
Based on what we’ve seen, it’s uncertain if Metro 2039 could run well on a Nintendo Switch 2. The game developers, 4A Games, are known for creating visually demanding games. While the Switch 2 can handle ray tracing – as demonstrated by Star Wars Outlaws – Metro 2039 might be too graphically intensive, potentially overtaxing the Switch 2’s processor and leading to poor performance.
If an announcement is made, we will eat our hats and update this page accordingly.

Metro 2039 takes players back to the Moscow metro tunnels. Unlike the more open world of Metro Exodus, it seems to be designed with a straightforward, story-driven experience similar to the original Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light.
A strict, controlling government called the Novoreich has seized power in the underground city of Moscow. Its leader, Hunter, is a hardened and experienced figure who once allied with Artyom.
In Metro 2039, players experience the story through the eyes of a character tormented by disturbing visions. Driven from his self-imposed isolation by painful memories, he’s forced to return to the devastated city of Moscow – a place he vowed never to revisit – and venture into the dangerous world of the Metro.
The trailer provides a look at the main ideas behind the game and the challenging circumstances 4A Games, the Ukrainian development team, faced while making it.

Yes, there is a Metro 2039 Gameplay Teaser trailer.
This shows a short gameplay clip from the trailer. It depicts the Stranger exploring an abandoned Metro station near the surface before being attacked by two mutants.
The Stranger headed back down the escalators and quickly fought off one of the mutants with a knife, then was pulled into the somewhat safer environment of the Metro.
The game’s visuals are stunning, and it’s fantastic to be back in the dark, claustrophobic world of the post-apocalyptic subway – even though we enjoyed the more open environments of the previous game, Exodus.
