So, it looks like Ubisoft just shut down ‘Alterra,’ a life sim game they’d been working on for about three years. Basically, it was aiming to be a lot like Animal Crossing, but it’s not happening anymore, sadly.
The project was likely canceled this week as part of the company’s major restructuring.
Insider Gaming reports that employees learned about the project’s cancellation during their workday and were then sent home for the rest of the day. It appears to have been a very abrupt decision.
So far, there haven’t been any layoffs announced. It appears developers have simply been reassigned to work on different games at Ubisoft.
You might remember Alterra, a game revealed in 2024. It combined the gameplay styles of Animal Crossing and Minecraft, using a block-based (voxel) world. The game included characters called ‘Matterlings’ that looked a bit like Funko Pop! figures.
It’s unlikely we’ll ever see if Alterra lived up to the games that inspired it. While it was never publicly announced or shown, now that the project is cancelled, we expect some early development footage might surface online.
