As a horror fan, I’ve noticed remakes are just always happening in this genre – it’s been going on forever! We’re already seeing it this year with the new Faces of Death, and it looks like that trend will continue into 2026. But if you’re looking for another remake, there’s a really cool one – a fresh take on a 46-year-old cult classic – that’s currently streaming for free on Tubi, but you don’t have a ton of time to catch it!
The 2008 slasher film Prom Night, starring Brittany Snow, will soon be removed from Tubi. This remake of the classic 1980 film—the fifth and last in the Prom Night series—follows high schooler Donna Keppel as she’s stalked by a dangerous former teacher with a history of violence against her family, all while trying to enjoy her senior prom. Despite a modest $20 million budget, the movie was a box office success, earning over $57 million.
The Prom Night Remake Failed to Live Up to the Legacy of the 1980 Original
Horror remakes often disappoint, and the 2008 remake of Prom Night didn’t help change that perception. It barely resembled the original, changing the story, the killer, and the overall message, and only kept the title and high school prom setting. The remake traded the original’s intriguing mystery for a predictable, less-scary stalker story, losing the suspense and atmosphere that made the first film effective. The result was a simple, uninspired chase movie with weak kills that lacked the tension and gore fans expect from a slasher film.
The film was widely considered a low point for the franchise. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a dismal 9% rating, a significant drop from the original’s 45% – which is now often seen as the stronger film. Audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a 38% rating. While it doesn’t measure up to the first movie, it’s still enjoyable if you approach it as a typical, glossy teen thriller from the early 2000s. It’s also a decent choice for younger horror fans, offering a suspenseful, but not overly graphic, slasher experience set against a familiar teen drama backdrop.
Where to Stream the Prom Night Remake After It Leaves Tubi?
If you’re a fan of horror, now’s the time to watch the 2008 remake of Prom Night on Tubi before it potentially leaves the platform. It’s currently unknown where it will stream next – it might move to another service, or you may have to rent or buy it. The original Prom Night from 1980 is much easier to find, as it’s available on Peacock, Prime Video, Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Plex.
