5 Marvel Heroes Wolverine Can’t Stand That He Could Finally Meet in the MCU

Hugh Jackman’s comeback as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie earned $1.3 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and having the biggest opening weekend for an MCU film in the US since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Jackman had said goodbye to the role after 2017’s Logan, where his character seemingly died. However, thanks to a lot of effort from his co-star Ryan Reynolds and the possibilities created by the multiverse storyline, Wolverine was able to return without negating the impact of his previous films.

The success of Deadpool & Wolverine has unexpectedly opened the door for Hugh Jackman to continue playing Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he hasn’t been officially announced for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s highly probable that Wolverine and Deadpool will play a role in the upcoming multiversal storyline. Since the pair survived their movie but haven’t yet joined the main timeline, and Marvel is planning a franchise reboot, the possibilities are endless. Once Jackman’s Wolverine enters the main timeline, Marvel can draw upon decades of comic book storylines to create compelling conflicts and rivalries for the character.

5) Black Panther

Wakanda is a country with strong borders and deeply held traditions, which would make it a difficult place for the unpredictable Wolverine to fit in. In the comics, Wolverine and Black Panther often fought because Wolverine didn’t respect Wakanda’s rules and customs. Black Panther is also a formidable opponent, with a vibranium suit and incredible speed that allows him to go toe-to-toe with Wolverine in a fight. Their conflict is further complicated by Storm, who was once married to Black Panther before running off with Wolverine. Now that Shuri is the new Black Panther, following Chadwick Boseman’s passing, the underlying tension between Wolverine and Wakanda still exists. Having Wolverine appear in Wakanda gives Marvel Studios a chance to show the conflict between someone who lives by their own rules and a society built on order and tradition.

4) Namor

The ongoing rivalry between Wolverine and Namor stems from their very different personalities. Namor, one of Marvel’s oldest mutants, sees himself as a king and often acts arrogantly, which clashes with Wolverine’s independent and rebellious nature. This difference in worldview is often the cause of their fights in the comics, as Wolverine refuses to simply obey Namor’s orders. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta) was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as the ruler of Talokan, a hidden underwater kingdom. Like his comic book version, he’s fiercely protective of his people and keeps Talokan separate from the outside world. Because Talokan heavily guards its supply of vibranium, the arrival of Wolverine – a mutant with an adamantium skeleton – naturally creates a situation ripe for conflict on screen.

3) Frank Castle

Frank Castle, the Punisher, often clashes with other superheroes because of his willingness to use deadly force. Though Wolverine also uses lethal methods, he considers Castle a dangerously unstable killer without a strong sense of right and wrong. Castle, in turn, sees Wolverine as a phony. With Jon Bernthal reprising the role in upcoming Marvel projects like Daredevil: Born Again, Punisher: One Last Kill, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Castle is now a confirmed part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine travels through time, a confrontation between the two is bound to happen, and it will be a brutal test of Wolverine’s healing factor against Castle’s military expertise and weaponry.

2) The Winter Soldier

The deep-seated hatred between Logan (Wolverine) and Bucky Barnes originates from a terrible personal loss. While under Soviet control as the Winter Soldier, Bucky killed Logan’s pregnant wife, Itsu, in a deliberate attempt to lure Logan out. This act sparked a decades-long quest for revenge that drastically changed the course of Logan’s life. Even though Bucky eventually remembered what he’d done and tried to make amends, Wolverine’s primal instincts make it incredibly difficult for him to forgive. In recent Marvel movies, Bucky (played by Sebastian Stan) has been working to redeem himself, even becoming an Avenger in Thunderbolts*. This path to recovery creates an interesting contrast with Wolverine, who is still haunted by his own violent past.

1) The Hulk

Wolverine first appeared in a Marvel comic book, The Incredible Hulk #181, sent by the Canadian government to eliminate the Hulk. Their fights quickly became famous and are known for their intense violence, as Wolverine’s adamantium claws constantly challenged the Hulk’s incredible strength. The Hulk is often portrayed as an unstoppable force, while Wolverine acts as an immovable object, destined to clash in comic books. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) learned to combine his intelligence with the Hulk’s power, creating “Smart Hulk” and controlling his anger. However, the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day is bringing back the more savage, unrestrained Hulk, potentially setting up a major fight with Wolverine in future films.
