Star Wars’ Next TV Show Gets Encouraging Update (But When Will We See It?)

Lucasfilm seems to be returning to making movies for theaters with projects like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, after focusing on new shows for Disney+ for several years. However, they aren’t leaving streaming behind completely. The animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has been renewed for another season, and a second season of the live-action show Star Wars: Ahsoka is also planned, although a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Recent news from Jon Favreau should reassure anyone concerned about potential delays.

Jon Favreau recently told SFX Magazine (via The Direct) that the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie connects to Season 2 of Ahsoka within the broader MandoVerse. He confirmed he’s seen all of Ahsoka Season 2 and explained how the two shows fit together. Favreau pointed out that the sequels established the rise of the First Order about 20 years after the current timeline. He described Ahsoka Season 2 as focusing on the ‘big picture’ and high-ranking officers, while The Mandalorian & Grogu offers a ‘ground-level’ view of events – essentially, the perspective of those carrying out the orders.

When Will Ahsoka Season 2 Release?

Favreau didn’t share many details about the progress of Ahsoka Season 2, but he did confirm he’s watched all the episodes, which is a good sign. This suggests post-production is going well and the episodes are mostly finished. While some work, especially on the visual effects, likely remains, the season seems to be coming together nicely. Despite Dave Filoni recently becoming Lucasfilm co-president, he’s still managed to complete Ahsoka.

If Jon Favreau has finished reviewing all of Ahsoka Season 2, the show is still expected to premiere this year. However, he didn’t mention when it might be released. Considering the first season came out in late August, a similar timeframe for Season 2 seems likely. This would give it some breathing room from The Mandalorian and Grogu, and it makes sense for Lucasfilm to space out the releases of its two major shows. While The Rise of Skywalker premiered during the first season of The Mandalorian, the Star Wars franchise has changed, and a different approach to scheduling seems wise now.

The delay in announcing a release date for Ahsoka Season 2 is likely due to the focus on The Mandalorian and Grogu. With the movie’s release just a month away, Lucasfilm and Disney are heavily promoting it to generate excitement and improve box office predictions. The Mandalorian and Grogu is their main priority right now, and they don’t want to divert attention with news about Ahsoka. We probably won’t hear any updates on Ahsoka until after the movie has had its run in theaters.

As we learn more about Season 2 of Ahsoka, it will be fascinating to see how the overall story of the MandoVerse unfolds. Originally, Season 4 of The Mandalorian was planned to lead directly into Ahsoka Season 2, and potentially Dave Filoni’s planned New Republic movie. However, when Lucasfilm decided to make a movie instead, Jon Favreau had to adjust his plans. He restructured The Mandalorian and Grogu to work as a self-contained film, accessible even to viewers who haven’t watched the series. Despite this, he hinted that connections to the larger narrative still exist. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how everything connects.
