James Gunn’s DC Universe Unveils First R-Rated Horror With Batman Villain In Clayface Trailer

This year, audiences will get a mature, R-rated Batman movie as part of the DC Universe, and the first trailer is now available.

DC Studios has released the first trailer for the upcoming Clayface movie, the second film in the new DC Universe planned for 2026. The trailer gives fans their first look at the iconic DC villain brought to life in live-action. You can watch it below.

Tom Rhys Harries will portray Clayface, an actor whose life changes dramatically after a disfiguring accident. Things worsen when an experiment transforms him into the well-known shapeshifting villain. Promotion for the movie started on Tuesday, April 21st, with the DCU film’s social media accounts releasing magazine covers hinting at the story.

James Watkins is directing the upcoming film Clayface, with a screenplay by horror master Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. This will be the first R-rated movie released under the new DC Studios banner led by James Gunn. DC Studios has also revealed the film’s synopsis, describing Clayface as a terrifying story about a Hollywood actor’s transformation into a monster, focusing on themes of lost identity, twisted love, and the dangers of unchecked scientific pursuits.

The upcoming film, scheduled for 2026, is a key part of the first phase of DC Studios’ new DC Universe, called “Gods and Monsters.” It will feature Clayface and arrive four months after the release of Supergirl on June 26th. Originally planned for September 11th, the film’s release was moved to October.

In a July 2025 interview with CBS, James Gunn emphasized that the upcoming Clayface movie will be very different from other DC films, describing it as a standalone horror film. He explained that they’re intentionally avoiding a single, unified style for all DC movies, and instead want to allow directors and writers to bring their unique visions to each project. Gunn stated the goal is to keep things fresh and exciting for audiences, preventing the films from becoming predictable.

As a DC fan, I’m really excited about Clayface finally getting a live-action debut in the upcoming movie! He’s been a great villain in the animated series for years, and while we saw Basil Karlo in Gotham, this will be the first time an actor—Harries—is playing Hagen in live-action. And it’s not just the movie expanding the DC universe either – HBO is releasing the Lanterns show in August 2026, right after Supergirl! It’s going to be a busy year for DC fans!

DC Studios’ Clayface arrives in theaters on October 23.
