Be warned – this contains major spoilers for the final episode of Invincible season 4, “Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here.” The episode reveals the frightening agreement made between Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace) and Mark Grayson.
At the end of Invincible season 4, Thragg discloses that after Mark, Omni-Man, and Thaedus destroyed Viltrum, the remaining Viltrumites have secretly settled on Earth. Their plan is to interbreed with humans to strengthen their dwindling population. Thragg gives Mark a difficult choice: allow the Viltrumites to carry out their plan without interference, or destroy humanity if they face any opposition. Ultimately, the latter option—annihilation of humans who resist—is what Thragg expects.
During a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant about Invincible season 4, actor Steven Pace shared why his character, Thragg, chooses to negotiate with Mark instead of simply killing him. He explained Thragg’s reasoning for being upfront about his plan, why keeping Mark alive is currently more beneficial, and what this all suggests for season 5. You can find Pace’s full explanation below.
I really enjoyed the final scene with Mark. It’s compelling how straightforward he is with Mark about his plans, and how he shows him respect. It feels like he’s saying, “This is my path, and you could be a part of it – either as an ally or an obstacle.” He’s essentially laying out his intentions and challenging Mark to respond. It would have been easy for him to act without warning, letting things unfold naturally, but he chooses to be direct. This shows he understands how powerful Mark is – he’s not trying to kill him, and he knows Mark can’t defeat Thragg. It’s a power play: “I’m not going to fight you to the death right now, but I’m moving forward. What will you do?” It’s a fantastic way to conclude the season, perfectly setting the stage for everything that’s coming next.
Thragg readily admits he could kill Mark, but he understands that wouldn’t contribute to the Viltrumite race’s recovery. Mark represents a successful continuation of their bloodline – he’s actually the reason Viltrumites were able to begin infiltrating Earth. However, Thragg doesn’t just want Mark as a symbol. He’s now forcing Mark to help with a terrible plan, threatening the lives of billions if he refuses.
What truly sets Thragg apart from other villains in Invincible isn’t just his incredible strength – he’s also a brilliant strategist. Revealing his plans and putting Mark in a no-win situation demonstrates his ability to outthink and control his opponents. This makes him a uniquely dangerous threat as the show moves into season 5, particularly now that he and the Viltrumites have secretly integrated into human society.
Throughout the seasons of Invincible, the Viltrum Empire has been a constant, distant threat. While characters like Omni-Man, Anissa, and Conquest caused destruction on Earth, the main war felt far away. Now, with Thragg and the Viltrumites arriving on Earth, that distance is gone, and season 5 is shaping up to be very different from what we’ve seen before.
Good news for fans! Season 5 of Invincible is happening, and voice recording is already finished. This was announced in July 2025, and it suggests the new season will likely arrive in early 2027, following the pattern of previous seasons. Creator Robert Kirkman has promised a quicker turnaround this time, so we won’t have to wait almost three years between seasons like we did after season 2.
While the Viltrumites will be central to season 5 of Invincible, Mark Grayson will face threats from other villains as well. Characters like Angstrom Levy and Volcanikka haven’t been definitively defeated. Plus, the end of season 4 showed that Thaedus left Allen the Alien with a dangerous biological weapon capable of wiping out the Viltrumites – and anyone similar to them – putting Mark, Omni-Man, Oliver, and all of humanity in grave danger.
All Invincible season 4 episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.
