Filming has started on “Man of Tomorrow,” and director James Gunn shared a first look photo from the set. With shows like “Creature Commandos” and “Peacemaker” Season 2, and the “Superman” series already establishing the new DC Universe, fans are excited to see “Supergirl,” “Lanterns,” and “Clayface” coming soon, before “Man of Tomorrow” arrives in theaters in a couple of years.
We don’t have many details about James Gunn’s Superman sequel yet, but we probably know the most important parts. The initial announcement hinted at a team-up between Superman and Lex Luthor, and while Brainiac has since been confirmed as the main villain in Man of Tomorrow, a recent set photo suggests the connection between David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult’s characters will be a key element of the story.
Superman And Lex’s Dynamic Is A Game Of Chess
Even if Superman and Lex Luthor remain rivals by the movie’s end—maybe even complicated rivals—they’re set to be more compelling than any other villain featured. The strongest moments in the film are likely to be those focusing on the relationships between Superman and Lois Lane, or Superman and Lex, thanks to James Gunn’s skillful writing and ability to create intense emotional scenes.
A recent set photo suggests a scene in Man of Tomorrow where Superman seeks help from Lex Luthor. Since Lex was responsible for creating the dimensional portals, it’s likely Brainiac will enter Earth through one of these portals. Superman may need Lex’s knowledge and assistance to deal with this new threat.
As a movie fan, I’ve been thinking about that chess scene in the trailer – it feels like more than just a game. It could be Lex literally playing chess with Superman, or maybe another prisoner, but I think it’s really setting up their whole relationship in Man of Tomorrow. Superman tried to connect with Lex on a human level, showing real empathy, which is a powerful thing. But Lex’s fear of anything different and his actions against Superman suggest their dynamic is going to be incredibly complex and interesting to watch unfold.
Man Of Tomorrow’s Brainiac Is Outmatched
Combining Superman’s strength with Lex Luthor’s intelligence would create a powerful team, especially with help from their allies. This setup promises a fascinating battle against Brainiac. And with early artwork hinting at Lex piloting a green and purple mech suit, it looks like he’ll be actively fighting as well.
We might also see the first appearance of Bizarro in the DCU. This could be the Superman clone, previously disguised as Ultraman in the Superman movie and sent into a black hole. This would give Lex Luthor a Superman-like opponent he could fight or destroy without facing the same public backlash as harming the real Superman, while Superman is busy battling Brainiac on his own.
As a huge DC fan, I’m already bracing myself for Brainiac – he’s going to be a massive challenge, especially if Superman and Lex have to team up! But honestly, I’m almost more excited to see how Superman and Lex’s own conflict plays out alongside all that. And seeing David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult share the screen again is going to be incredible. Plus, with Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl joining the mix in Man of Tomorrow, I think this movie is going to really expand the DCU and build out a fascinating world. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
