Adolescence and Strike favourites join Helena Bonham Carter in first look at BBC’s new period drama with “humour and love”

I just saw the first pictures from the new BBC drama, California Avenue, and I’m already hooked! It’s set in the 1970s and features two of my favorite actors, Bill Nighy – who I loved in Lazarus – and the incredibly talented Helena Bonham Carter, who was brilliant in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. It looks amazing!

The photos show Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter portraying their characters, Jerry and Eddie. Erin Doherty, known for her role in ‘Adolescence’, plays Lela, and Tom Burke, from ‘Strike’, appears as Cooper.

The cast also includes Kate Robbins, known for her role in Unforgotten, as Priscilla, Paul Kaye from Small Prophets as Kevin, and newcomer Cammie Liebreich playing Bee.

Hugo Blick, the award-winning creator of “The English,” is behind this new series. It will be shown on BBC One and available to stream on BBC iPlayer soon.

The synopsis for the six-part series says that it is a “story brimming with humour and love”.

The story unfolds in the 1970s at a quiet caravan park nestled in the beautiful English countryside. The peaceful atmosphere is shattered when Lela and her 11-year-old daughter, Bee, arrive seeking a safe haven and a fresh start.

This is where a broken family will reunite, old hurts will finally be healed, and a surprising romance will blossom.

Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter play Jerry and Eddie, the parents of a young woman named Lela. They were famous ballroom dancers in the 1930s, but had to flee during the war and have been living in hiding for thirty years. Tom Burke stars as Cooper, a troubled outsider whose difficult history is about to disrupt life on California Avenue.

Kate Robbins stars as Priscilla, the strong-willed woman in charge of the caravan park. Paul Kaye plays Kevin, her husband, who manages the site and handles all sorts of repairs and tasks.

California Avenue will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
