I’m so excited! DC just announced when their new show, Lanterns, is coming out! It stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Honestly, the first trailer was a bit of a surprise – it seems like they’re going for a much more realistic take on the story than I expected. A lot of fans are now thinking there might only be one Power Ring being used throughout the series, and that it’s going to be about Hal and John passing the torch to each other, even if they don’t want to. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
The chances of that theory being true have increased now that James Gunn has announced on social media that Lanterns will be available to stream on HBO Max in August. He also shared the show’s intriguing tagline: “Only one can wear the ring.”

Some Green Lantern fans have expressed disappointment with the new series, particularly its grounded, Earth-based approach, which differs from the typically grand, space-faring adventures of the comics. Concerns are now growing that the character Hal Jordan might not remain a significant part of the DC Universe for much longer.
Lanterns’ Plot is Still Largely a Mystery
The trailer for Lanterns seems to back up the idea that Hal Jordan and another character are competing to be Earth’s Green Lantern. The theory suggests Hal might be stepping down, possibly because his power ring is damaged – we’ve seen it in the trailer and it looks cracked. However, within the DC Universe storyline, one problem arises: we’ve already met Guy Gardner in the Superman movie.
I’m a little confused why only John or Hal can wear the ring, considering Guy Gardner is also an option. It feels like this might upset some Hal Jordan fans, but I’ll reserve my opinion until I’ve seen the show.

Some fans are disappointed they might not see much of Hal Jordan, especially since the 2011 Green Lantern movie wasn’t well-received. Others have noted the show is titled Green Lanterns (plural), suggesting it won’t focus solely on him.

Interestingly, this version of the Green Lantern story simplifies some long-standing inconsistencies. Usually, each sector of space is assigned a single Green Lantern protector. It’s always felt strange that most alien races only have one ring-bearer, while several humans have been Power Ring wielders simultaneously. The comics have tried to address this by suggesting changes to the Green Lantern rules, but those changes haven’t always been clearly shown.
If DC is committed to having only one Green Lantern per sector, it likely means the upcoming “Lanterns” series is set earlier in the Green Lantern timeline. This would create a sequence where Hal Jordan came first, followed by John Stewart, and then Guy Gardner. This approach would thematically represent a progression from a heroic, individualistic figure, to a law enforcer, and finally to someone working for a corporate entity. While this would be a fresh and interesting idea, it’s odd to introduce two major Green Lantern characters in the past if they don’t play a role in the future of the DC Universe.
