Xbox Will ‘Reevaluate’ Its Game Exclusivity, Throwing Potential Doubt Over PS5 Ports

Asha Sharma, the new head of Xbox, announced in a letter to players that the company will be reconsidering its strategy regarding exclusive video games.

A new plan for the Xbox brand, led by Asha Sharma, has been detailed in a statement on Xbox Wire called “We Are Xbox.” Sharma explains that in the coming months and years, Xbox will regularly review its strategies regarding exclusive games, release windows, and the use of artificial intelligence, and will share updates as they make decisions.

So, there were rumors going around – Windows Central reported it – that Xbox was thinking about making its games exclusive to their platform again. Now, it’s official: they are actually having those conversations. It sounds like they’re seriously considering going back to that model.

Over the past few years, Microsoft has been releasing more and more of its Xbox and PC games on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It’s now common to expect that games made by Microsoft for Xbox will also become available on PS5, either at the same time or shortly after their Xbox release.

Recently, both Gears of War: Reloaded and The Outer Worlds 2 were released on PlayStation 5 alongside their Xbox versions. Looking ahead, Forza Horizon 6 will initially launch on Xbox before becoming available on PS5 later this year. Both Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved have been confirmed to release on PS5 at the same time as the Xbox versions.

While it’s highly improbable that recent internal Microsoft conversations will change any previously announced plans for PlayStation 5, a return to exclusivity could mean some games yet to be officially confirmed for PS5 might not get ported. This includes titles like Clockwork Revolution, Hideo Kojima’s OD, and State of Decay 3, which haven’t had their PS5 releases confirmed.
