Rumer Willis Reveals How She Handles Criticism as a Single Mom

Rumer Willis will always be a die-hard advocate for herself.

This explains why she frequently responds to criticism online about her parenting of her three-year-old daughter, Louetta, with her ex-partner, Derek Thomas.

Okay, so I was totally starstruck at this Earth Day dinner – I got to talk to Rumer! She told me she doesn’t want to come across as out of touch or anything, but she’s really focused on finding common ground with people, you know? Like, finding those places where we all connect and can actually support each other. It was amazing, honestly. She’s so genuine!

I don’t always handle things perfectly,” she said. “To be honest, some days are just difficult. We all struggle with wanting to be understood and accepted. Some days I can brush things off, but other times, it really gets to me.

Like all parents, she experiences the joys and challenges of raising children. However, growing up as the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis was a unique experience for her.

I recognize I’ve had advantages others haven’t,” she said. “My experiences are different, and that creates a gap in understanding. While I face challenges as a single mother, I know my situation isn’t the same as everyone else’s, and I’m aware of that.

I’ve always said, you have to stand up for what you believe in, and Rumer Willis is a perfect example. I was so impressed when she addressed the questions some fans had about her continuing to breastfeed her toddler – she didn’t shy away from explaining her choices, and that takes real strength. She really handled it beautifully, and I think it’s important to remember you don’t need to justify personal decisions to anyone.

She told TopMob the whole situation was wild. People get really intense about everything, which she actually found amusing. Everyone seems to have strong opinions on how parents should raise their kids – from sleep schedules and food to clothing and everything in between.

However, she did note, “It’s kind of part of the game.”

Honestly, it’s just amazing to see how her family supports everything she does – they’re not just family, they’re her whole world, her rock solid support system! Bruce Willis and Demi Moore first met in August 1987 at the premiere of the movie Stakeout. Interestingly, neither of them starred in the film, but Demi was there to support her former fiancé, Emilio Estevez, who did.

Bruce had recently gone through a breakup, and Demi, previously married to Freddy Moore from 1981 to 1985, was open to meeting someone new.

In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi Moore (known as ‘the Ghost’) wrote that she and her then-husband immediately discussed their shared desire to start a family and have children.

They fell in love quickly and, just months after meeting, spontaneously eloped in Las Vegas while attending a boxing match. They got married at the Golden Nugget hotel on November 21, 1987, and followed it up with a larger, more formal wedding celebration a month later, where Little Richard officiated the ceremony.

Despite struggles Demi later revealed in her memoir – including Bruce telling her in 1990 he questioned wanting to be married – they publicly appeared to be a perfect Hollywood couple until they announced their separation in 1998.

But they remained a family unit. 

In 2000, Bruce told Rolling Stone that he still loved Demi and they remained very close. Despite no longer being a couple, they were committed to co-parenting their three children and their bond felt as strong as ever. He emphasized their ongoing friendship and shared commitment to their kids for the long term.

Demi has said she and Bruce started trying to have a child even before their whirlwind wedding.

It’s possible they succeeded, as their daughter, Rumer Glenn Willis, was born on August 16, 1988, in Paducah, Kentucky. Her father was filming the movie In Country there at the time.

For a few years after Rumer was born, her parents often showed home movies of her birth when they had guests over – it was the highlight of their entertaining.

Demi recalled in a 1991 interview with Vanity Fair that Bruce stayed with her throughout all 15 hours of her labor, only leaving briefly once to use the restroom.

Rumer Willis has always admired how well her parents handled their divorce when she was nine years old. She recently told People magazine in October 2024 that they always made sure she didn’t have to split holidays or birthdays between them.

In a 2015 interview with Larry King, she explained that her parents always prioritized family togetherness. They consistently made an effort to attend events as a complete family, ensuring they functioned as a single unit rather than two separate entities, and she believes this had a significant positive effect.

Rumer and her partner, Derek Richard Thomas, had a daughter named Louetta Isley Thomas Willis on April 18, 2022.

The actress from My Divorce Party revealed her baby’s names were inspired by her father’s favorite musicians: Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and the Isley Brothers.

“She brings so much happiness!” said Demi, a proud grandmother, in an interview with TopMob News in January 2024. “It’s everything everyone says about being a grandparent – all the fun and joy, and the bonus of getting to relax and get a good night’s sleep.”

Rumer and Derek ended their relationship in August 2024, but Rumer publicly thanked her parents for showing her what a successful co-parenting relationship looks like.

Rumer Willis shared in October 2024 that her friendship with Derek Richard Thomas remains strong. She told People magazine they’ve successfully navigated a loving co-parenting relationship while still maintaining their close bond, and both are happy with the arrangement for themselves and their daughter, Lou.

Scout LaRue Willis was born on July 20, 1991, in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her parents chose to raise her and her siblings outside of Hollywood during their childhood years.

Not that they didn’t do glitz and glam.

Demi Moore made headlines when she appeared nude and pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair in August 1991. The photo, taken while she was expecting her second daughter, became iconic and has been copied many times since.

“Pregnancy agrees with me,” she told the magazine. “I feel comfortable.”

Although Scout appeared in a few of her parents’ films when she was younger, she was more passionate about photography and music. After graduating from Brown University, she released her first album, also titled ‘Scout,’ in 2022.

She’s a big fan of movies, and even before Demi Moore received a Golden Globe for The Substance, Scout praised her mother’s work in the darkly comedic and unsettling horror film.

Scout shared with Us Weekly in November 2024 that she was deeply impressed by this woman, whom she greatly admires. She described her as incredibly beautiful and talented, and praised her bravery in being completely herself. Scout believes sharing that authenticity is a gift, and that it positively impacted many people.

Tallulah Belle Willis was born Feb. 3, 1994, in Hailey, Idaho.

Bruce told Rolling Stone in 2000 that people had offered various reasons for his situation, some suggesting it was karma. He admitted some found it amusing that the tough action star was also a devoted father to daughters. ‘But I’d have three more daughters in a heartbeat,’ he said. ‘They’re wonderful.’

When Tallulah was in third grade, her family—the Willis-Moores—moved from Idaho to Los Angeles. This gave her a more Hollywood-centered childhood than her sisters, but it wasn’t a positive experience.

The founder of the clothing brand Wyllis has openly shared her struggles with addiction, starting with getting sober at age 20. She also received treatment for depression at 25 and later dealt with anorexia. In a 2023 essay for Vogue, she explained that while medication for her ADHD was beneficial, it also reduced her appetite, which made her overly focused on her weight.

Following another stay in treatment, prompted by her father’s declining health—the family had revealed Bruce Willis’s aphasia diagnosis in March 2022—Tallulah was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

She shared in an article for Vogue that recovery will likely be a continuous process, but she’s now equipped with the resources to fully engage in all areas of her life, particularly her relationship with her father.

Tallulah shared the happy news of her engagement to musician Justin Acee on Christmas Eve. He proposed at her future mother-in-law’s house in Idaho, making sure someone was there to film the special moment.

After his divorce from Demi Moore, Bruce Willis didn’t expect to fall in love again. But in 2007, he met Emma Heming, a model born in Malta, at the gym where they both worked with the same trainer.

In a 2009 interview with W magazine, Bruce Willis admitted that the past decade of being single had been largely unhappy. He described feeling down and never believing that a relationship would solve his problems. He’d tell people he wasn’t lonely despite being alone, but he now realizes he was just deceiving himself.

He said his life improved significantly after he began dating Emma, who is 23 years younger than him.

Bruce Willis and Emma Heming married on March 21, 2009, in a beach ceremony at their home in Turks and Caicos. Demi Moore, who was married to Ashton Kutcher at the time, and their daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, were also there. Bruce and Demi divorced in 2011 after six years together.

On December 29, 2024, Emma celebrated 17 years of marriage. Having openly discussed the challenges her husband faces with his health, she shared that their relationship is powered by unwavering love.

Emma and Bruce Willis had a daughter, Mabel Ray, on April 1st, 2012, in Los Angeles. The family later moved to Bedford Hills, New York.

In 2017, Emma explained to Elle Decor that one of the best things about their home is its proximity to the city, offering a balance between urban convenience and peaceful living.

Despite living far apart, Scout, Tallulah, and Demi remained close friends with Mabel and were able to celebrate her sixth-grade graduation with her in June 2024.

Oh my gosh, when Evelyn Penn Willis was born on May 5th, 2014, Bruce was just over the moon! He was so happy to finally have five daughters – it was the most amazing thing ever, honestly! You could just feel his joy!

Oh my gosh, he said the sweetest thing after the baby arrived! He told People magazine that they were totally surprised, didn’t even know what they were having! But the best part? He said, and I quote, ‘Women should be in charge of everything. Women are just much smarter than men!’ Seriously, can he be any more perfect? It’s just…everything I ever wanted to hear! He just gets it, you know?

Emma shared with Elle Decor that Bruce was very accommodating and happily made time for their daughters, always going with whatever plans they had.

She explained that he’s become very giving with his time because he’s been a parent for so long and understands his time isn’t just his own anymore.

Emma described her family as traditional, prioritizing family above all else. They focus on teaching their children good manners, grace, and the value of education. However, they also encourage self-expression, while still setting reasonable boundaries. Importantly, they work hard to avoid raising spoiled children, striving for a healthy balance in how they parent.

Emma has been honest with Mabel and Evelyn about their father’s health, but she’s also making an effort to create positive experiences for them. She’s been sharing videos from their recent trip to Paris and decorating for Christmas at home to bring some joy to their lives.
