Kathleen Turner brought the heat with her latest outing.
At the premiere of her animated film, Animal Farm, on April 21st, 71-year-old Turner posed for photos. She walked with a cane and wore a comfortable outfit: a loose-fitting black button-down shirt, black trousers, and black Crocs.
Despite generally avoiding public events, actress Awkwafina—who provides the voice for the character Benjamin in a new movie alongside Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, Glenn Close, and others—has been seen at more events lately, including the premiere of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man on March 10th.
While on the red carpet for Peaky Blinders, actress Susan Hayward playfully corrected photographers who addressed her informally. When called by her first name, she quipped, “What I appreciate at this point in my career? Being called Miss Turner.”
When the Animal Farm event arrived, the photographers remembered her specific instruction and addressed her as Miss Turner as she came near. She playfully asked, “Did you all get the memo?”
As someone who’s seen a lot of careers, I’ve learned that taking care of yourself is always the priority. This actress, a true icon from the ’80s, has thankfully been working consistently, but she’s also been very open about needing to step back at times to manage her rheumatoid arthritis. It’s a painful condition causing inflammation in the joints, and honestly, prioritizing health when dealing with something like that is incredibly important – and admirable. It’s a reminder that even stars need to focus on well-being.
In a 2023 interview with The Guardian, she described how the condition left her unable to walk or even hold a glass. She had to scoot up and down stairs on her bottom. She explained the pain was constant and inescapable, no matter how she tried to sit, lie down, or stand. She noted that people often don’t fully grasp the severity of her condition because it isn’t life-threatening, but it dramatically impacts her quality of life.
Doctors once predicted she would need a wheelchair for life, but medical improvements helped her regain movement. In a 2019 interview with Salon, she explained how her condition – diagnosed in 1993 – affected her career, saying that people in Hollywood were often scared of what they didn’t understand about her illness.

Fortunately, the autoimmune disease didn’t hold the actress, known for Peggy Sue Got Married, back for long. She’s continued to work in many roles since her diagnosis, and recently shared how much she enjoyed collaborating with Andy Serkis – who both directed and acted alongside her – on the film Animal Farm.
I really liked it. While I don’t have the same level of responsibility as Andy, it was a great experience,” she shared with Digital Journal on April 22.
While Tina Turner remained involved in entertainment, here’s a look at other celebrities who decided to distance themselves from Hollywood.

Following a serious heart attack in 2019, the actor best known for The Mask of Zorro returned to his hometown of Málaga, Spain, to dedicate himself to performing on stage.
In March 2026, Antonio told The Times that the experience completely changed his perspective on life. Confronting his own mortality led him to reflect and recognize his core identity as an actor.
The Tony Award nominee, who still acts in TV and movies sometimes, now owns a theater and actively participates in local events.
He went on to say he’d never felt happier. Staying connected to his community – his roots, his neighbors, and the people he grew up with – meant everything to him. That connection hadn’t faded with time; in fact, it had grown stronger.

After 19 seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 following accusations of a negative and harmful workplace. These claims led to an internal investigation, the dismissal of several executives, and widespread public criticism.
Ellen made a comeback with her last stand-up comedy special, For Your Approval, which premiered on Netflix in September 2024. Before the special’s release, she announced her plans to retire from Hollywood.
During her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up tour, the comedian told the audience, according to SFGate, that she’s retiring after her upcoming Netflix special. She stated, “This is the last time you’re going to see me.”
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have settled in the Cotswolds. Ellen shared with Richard Bacon in July 2025, during a conversation at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, that they decided to remain there after Donald Trump won reelection in November 2024.
She raved about the English countryside, telling the BBC it was ‘absolutely beautiful’ and unlike anything she was used to. She especially loved the charming villages, towns, and architecture, and appreciated the slower pace of life.
“It’s just a nicer place,” Ellen explained. “The animals are well cared for, and everyone is so friendly. We really love living here. We moved in November, which wasn’t the best timing, but I finally got to see snow! Portia brought her horses with her, and I have chickens. We even had sheep for a couple of weeks.”

Tyra Banks, host of America’s Next Top Model, decided to move to Australia partly to focus on her ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream. She explained on Today with Jenna & Friends that her business had been supplying ice cream to places like airlines and cruise ships, and she was frequently traveling to Australia to oversee production at a large facility there. She quickly fell in love with the country during her visits.
She also recognized Australia as a strong market for her product, noting that the top three ice cream-consuming countries are America, New Zealand, and Australia.
Ultimately, Tyra moved to Australia with her son, York (whose father is her ex, Erik Asla), and her boyfriend, Louis Bélanger-Martin, saying that Australia has been a wonderful experience for her and her family.

Eva Longoria, known for her role on Desperate Housewives, has moved from Los Angeles and now splits her time between Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago. She explained to Marie Claire that while she enjoyed living in Los Angeles for most of her adult life, the city had changed, and the pandemic accelerated that shift. Issues like homelessness and high taxes also contributed to her decision, though she doesn’t want to criticize California.
Longoria clarified to The View: Behind the Table that her move wasn’t politically motivated by President Trump’s election. Instead, it stemmed from work opportunities—six months filming in Catalonia, four months in Mexico for Searching for Mexico, and then returning to Spain. She’s been living there for years now and dislikes the idea of it being framed as a political statement. She continues to be busy with acting projects, including roles in Only Murders in the Building and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip. She also expressed empathy for those who aren’t able to leave the United States, acknowledging her privilege to be able to move freely.

Actor Richard Gere has relocated from Chicago to Spain with his family. He explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his wife, Alejandra Silva, who is from Galicia, encouraged the move, and they plan to live in Madrid for several years. Gere is enthusiastic about the opportunity for their young sons, Alexander and James, to thrive in a bilingual environment. He also has an adult son, Homer, from a previous relationship with Carey Lowell. The family seems to be enjoying their new life. In an interview with Elle España, Gere shared that they are happier than ever and are really hitting their stride.

Singer Christina Milian and her family have officially made Paris their home. Married to French singer Matt Pokora for over seven years, the couple previously spent half the year commuting between the U.S. and France. They decided to fully relocate so their children – Violet (from a previous marriage), and sons Isaiah and Kenna – could attend school in France. Milian feels it’s a wonderful opportunity for them to learn the language and experience a new culture. The family seems to be thriving in their new life. Milian shared with TopMob that her kids are happy and fluent in French, and she’s enjoying a balanced lifestyle with daytime activities and work during the evenings.

Lindsay Lohan is frustrated by the ongoing speculation surrounding her departure from Los Angeles. She recently explained her decision, reflecting on her busy career and social life in the early 2000s.
In an interview with Bustle in March 2024, Lohan said she felt her work was often overshadowed by the constant attention of the paparazzi, which was frustrating. She wished the focus had remained on her career, but the media attention spiraled out of control, prompting her desire to step away.
Lohan moved overseas, first to London and then to Dubai, even opening beach clubs in Greece. However, she also sought a more private life away from the public eye.
Lindsay Lohan admitted she worried she might never find love, wondering if it would ever happen for her. She realized she needed to focus on herself before she could open herself up to new possibilities and say ‘yes’ to the things she truly wanted.
Eventually, she did find love with Bader Shammas, and they married in 2022, welcoming their son, Luai, in 2023.
Although they currently live in Dubai, Lindsay hasn’t left acting behind. She’s continued to star in films such as Our Little Secret, Irish Wish, and Freakier Friday.

Josh decided to leave Hollywood after some careful thought. He explained to People magazine in July 2024 that Hollywood isn’t just a location, but a way of life. He wanted to avoid being surrounded by people constantly focused on the film industry, fearing it would narrow his perspective. He craved a life with more variety and opportunities for personal growth, telling the magazine that ‘the spice of life’ comes from being around people with diverse interests.
As a result, Josh, his wife Tamsin Egerton, and their four children moved to the Hampshire countryside in England. He told The Guardian in July 2024 that while life with four kids is busy, it also allows him to focus on what truly matters. Despite the move, Josh has continued to act, appearing in films like Verity, Fight or Flight, and Trap.

If you don’t follow Jesse on social media, you might be surprised to learn he no longer lives in Los Angeles. In a February 2025 interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, the star of A Real Pain revealed he’s lived in Indiana for the past ten years, finding it a more comfortable and stable environment. Despite being an Oscar nominee, Jesse leads a fairly ordinary life with his wife, Anna Strout, and son, Banner. He explained that he avoids social media and doesn’t spend much time networking within the industry, which helps him maintain a sense of normalcy. His wife is a teacher, and his son isn’t particularly interested in movies, further distancing him from the pressures of Hollywood and allowing him to avoid constantly worrying about his career status.

Eliza, known for her roles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the movie Bring It On, announced in September 2024 that she’s now a certified psychedelic-assisted therapist and is continuing her education in the field of mental health.
She told Boston Magazine that she was able to change her life’s path to focus on her own well-being, with the goal of then helping others. She feels it’s important to share the positive changes she’s experienced and the sense of fulfillment she’s found, as this work truly feels like her calling and purpose.

The actress best known for playing Wilma Flintstone shared that she and her son, Clay, moved to Ireland in January 2025 and she’s working on becoming an Irish citizen because of her family history there. While she mentioned current political issues as a factor in her move, she hasn’t closed the door on eventually moving back to her home country.
In a TikTok video, she shared that she misses her children, friends, and life back home. She’s working on building a new life in her current country and said they’ll think about returning to America when it’s safe and everyone there has equal rights.

Actress Evangeline Lilly, known for her role in Ant-Man and the Wasp, has announced she’s stepping away from acting for an unspecified period after two decades in the business.
In a June 2024 Instagram post, Evangeline shared how happy and at peace she feels while pursuing her life’s purpose. She expressed gratitude for her blessings and explained that while choosing a path less traveled – one that doesn’t necessarily lead to wealth or fame – can be daunting, it ultimately brings a deeper sense of fulfillment. She described it as moving from fear to contentment by living authentically.
However, she’s not ruling out a return to Hollywood completely, saying, “I could see myself going back someday, but right now, I’m happy where I am.”

I’ve been a big fan of Paul Wesley for years, ever since The Vampire Diaries. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him in a new acting role – the last one was V-Wars on Netflix back in 2019, I think. But honestly, I’m so impressed with what he’s been doing lately! He’s really dedicated himself to fighting climate change, and he’s doing it by focusing on improving the health of our planet’s soil. It’s a fantastic cause, and it’s great to see him using his platform for something so important.
As a mom and entrepreneur, balancing everything is always a juggle! About four years ago, I decided to shift my focus from acting to prioritize raising my kids and building my businesses. A big part of that has been getting these passion projects, the documentaries Kiss the Ground and Common Ground, out into the world. Both films are really about the importance of regenerative farming and creating a healthier planet, and it’s been incredibly rewarding work.
Looking ahead, the actor plans to dedicate himself to ranching and building lasting brands – including his bourbon and wellness company. He’s deeply committed to sustainable farming and healthy soil practices, which are central to his and his family’s lifestyle. He explained this is his true calling, and the reason behind his passion for these endeavors. He sees this as his future, and who he ultimately wants to be.

In a February 2021 episode of her podcast, Empty Inside, former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy shared with guest Anna Faris that she had quit acting a few years prior. She’s now pursuing writing and directing, alongside hosting the podcast.
Jennette shared in her 2022 memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, that she deeply regrets many of her past acting roles. She admitted to feeling resentful towards her career and unfulfilled by the parts she played, describing them as cheesy and embarrassing. Having worked on those shows from age 13 to 21, she was already self-conscious by age 15, feeling her peers didn’t view her TV work as something to be proud of.
Despite past experiences, she hasn’t ruled out returning to acting. She explained to TopMob News in October 2022 that writing her book helped her consider acting in a new light, free from the pressures she felt before. She believes the only way she might consider it again would be if she wrote a role specifically for herself.

It seemed like a clear choice. The opportunity to marry Prince Harry, devote ourselves to meaningful charitable work, and even wear the Queen’s tiaras would make leaving Hollywood completely worthwhile.
Like Grace Kelly before her, Meghan Markle transitioned from a successful acting career – notably her role in the TV show Suits – to a life within the British Royal Family. After stepping back from their senior royal duties and moving to Montecito, California, Meghan is now returning to professional life. This includes a production deal with Netflix, where she’s released the docuseries Harry & Meghan and will launch a lifestyle show called With Love, Meghan in 2025. She has also ventured into podcasting and launched her brand, As Ever.

After starring in over 40 films since she began her career with 1994’s The Mask, the actress really needed a rest when she finished filming Annie in 2014.
She told Gwyneth Paltrow that she realized she wanted a different lifestyle. After years of intense work and filmmaking, she felt burned out. Making a movie, she explained, is incredibly demanding – it requires long hours and completely takes over your life for months, leaving no room for anything else.
Cameron Diaz had many interests she wanted to pursue, including writing – she’d already had success with books like The Body Book and The Longevity Book – and starting a family with her husband, Benji Madden. While she told InStyle magazine in 2019 that she didn’t miss acting and was focused on wellness, it seemed she might be open to returning for at least one more project.
Jamie Foxx explained that he and others really had to convince Cameron Diaz to star in the upcoming 2025 Netflix movie, Back in Action. He said they pleaded with her, emphasizing how much fans wanted to see her return and how great the film would be. “We love her, we’ve been waiting on her and this is just gonna be fantastic,” Foxx told TopMob News.

The actor stated firmly that he wouldn’t return to the show after completing his five years on Empire. When Extra asked Terrence Howard about his plans before the sixth and final season aired in 2019, he said, “I’m finished with acting. I’m done with pretending.”
Despite appearing in a few projects since then, the Academy Award nominee announced his retirement from acting again in 2022 while promoting his Peacock series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. He explained to Entertainment Tonight that he felt he’d given everything he had to offer as an actor and now wants to focus on enjoying and watching new talent, rather than simply repeating past performances.
Even with those earlier concerns, Howard has continued to act, appearing in projects like the TV series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist and the Netflix film Shirley. He also has several other projects planned for the future.

After his character, King Joffrey, died on the show in 2014, the 21-year-old actor told EW he was leaving acting. He explained that he’d been acting since he was a child, but simply wasn’t enjoying it as much anymore.
Jack isn’t a child star anymore, and some of the initial excitement has faded. He explained that turning acting into a career felt different. “Before, it was just something fun I did with friends or during the summer,” he said. “I still like it, but making a living from something changes how you feel about it. It’s not that I dislike it, it’s just not my long-term goal.”
After taking six years off, Jack returned to acting in 2020 with a role in the BBC series Out of Her Mind. Since then, he’s also been in films like Rebecca’s Boyfriend and In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and TV shows including Safe Harbor and The Famous Five.

When Jennifer Aniston, known for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, married actor Kevin Kline in 1989, they decided to stagger their work schedules. As Kline explained to Playboy, this arrangement allowed them to both be available to care for their children, Owen and Greta, who is now a singer performing as Frankie Cosmos.
He added that Phoebe has consistently prioritized staying home with her children whenever she was scheduled to work. While she made a brief appearance in her friend Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 2001 film, The Anniversary Party, Cates primarily focuses on running her boutique, Blue Tree, in New York City.

You know, back when I was really watching the ’80s scene, Rick Moranis was everywhere – huge with Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids! But then, sadly, he took a step back from making movies after losing his wife to breast cancer in 1991. He made the incredibly admirable decision to prioritize raising his kids, Rachel and Mitchell, and honestly, family always comes first. It was a big change for fans, but a beautiful one to witness.
Despite not appearing in a live-action movie since 1997 – he even turned down a small role in the 2016 Ghostbusters remake – Rick remains a beloved figure, as demonstrated by the strong reaction to news of an assault he experienced while walking in New York City in 2020.
Good news for his fans: he’s returning to the screen in the upcoming Disney reboot Shrunk, alongside Josh Gad.

After marrying fashion designer Adam Kimmel in 2010, actress Drew Barrymore suggested she was considering stepping back from acting. She told Vogue that most acting roles require intimate scenes, and she wasn’t interested in that. She explained that taking on such roles felt risky, and while her marriage was solid, she needed a truly exceptional opportunity to justify it.
After her son, Martin, joined his sister, Louisanna, in 2014, she firmly decided to step away from acting. She told Us Weekly in 2016 that she felt like an outsider and was now focused solely on being a mom. She also helps her husband, Kimmel, with his work and enjoys painting as a hobby, explaining that her children were the main reason she stopped pursuing film roles.

She’d built a strong resume with roles in popular shows like Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, and Scandal. After those experiences, the Australian actress started to feel like it was time for a change.
Turning 45 got me thinking – I really wanted a new challenge, something completely different I hadn’t tried before. As an actress, I had a pretty good idea of what the next decade or two would look like professionally, so I made a big decision: I stepped away from acting to start my own business. It felt like the right time for a fresh start and a completely new adventure!
Her company, General Public, which creates art for everyone, was almost complete – she just needed to finish one final piece.
I spoke with Mitch Hurwitz, the creator of Arrested Development, and told him I wouldn’t participate in a fifth season because I had decided to stop acting. He was very understanding and supportive, and we had a good talk. Surprisingly, he ended up writing me into five episodes anyway.

I have to admit, after Daniel Day-Lewis won three Oscars, I started to wonder what else he could possibly strive for. It didn’t entirely surprise me when, after his sixth Oscar nomination for Phantom Thread in 2017, his team announced he was retiring from acting. The statement was really gracious, thanking everyone he’d worked with and all of his fans over the years. He made it clear it was a personal decision and that he wouldn’t be discussing it further, and honestly, I respect that so much. It felt like a perfect, fitting end to an incredible career.
Just as Daniel Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a new project drew him back in. In October 2024, Focus Features revealed he would star in Anemone, a film he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who will also be directing.

After gaining fame on the show Good Luck Charlie, she decided to focus on her education in 2018. She went on to earn both a master’s degree and a PhD from MIT, and she also attended Harvard Law School.
On top of everything else, Bridgit started her own company, Northwood Space, in February 2023. The company is building ground stations to facilitate communication with satellites, and Bridgit became its CEO.
