An Unfinished Sci-Fi Movie Franchise Could Finally Be Saved Thanks to New Release That Rewrites the Original Story

A science fiction movie series that was left incomplete might finally be continued, and it will do so by reimagining the original storyline. It’s often frustrating when a movie or series doesn’t finish, leaving audiences without a proper ending. This was particularly true for fans of the Divergent series, which ended abruptly. After the studio decided to split the final book into two films, the second half, Allegiant – Part 2, was never made. While readers can find out what happens to the characters in the original books, many fans felt the film series ended unsatisfactorily.

It’s unlikely the Divergent movie series will be completed after the disappointing performance of Allegiant – Part 1 ten years ago. The film earned $179 million globally but cost over $100 million to make, and critics gave it a very low 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, a new Divergent project could potentially be a fresh start, similar to successful reboots of series like Percy Jackson & the Olympians and His Dark Materials.

Veronica Roth Is Rewriting Divergent in Two New Book Releases

BookCon, the popular event for book lovers, was held last weekend, and author Veronica Roth used the occasion to announce two new books in the Divergent series. These aren’t just sequels—they’re reimagining the entire story with a fresh concept. The first book, The Sixth Faction, will be released on October 6th and presents an alternate version of Tris’s story. Instead of joining the Dauntless faction, she becomes factionless. Roth shared with Elle magazine that she started writing the new book as a way to revisit her earlier work with the benefit of experience, allowing her to enjoy the process more. She explained that it felt good to think, ‘You can improve upon this now,’ recognizing how much she’s grown as a writer and what she would do differently.

Just the idea of The Sixth Faction is thrilling, because Veronica Roth has become a more skilled writer since she first published Divergent. Readers will get to revisit this world in a fresh way, and there’s even hope for a happier outcome this time, though it’s too early to say for sure. Beyond the book itself, the release of The Sixth Faction and its sequel could revive interest in the Divergent series and potentially lead to a new movie or TV adaptation.

The New Divergent Books Could Lead to a Reboot of the Unfinished Movie Franchise

Now that the Divergent series is being revisited in book form, there’s a chance Hollywood might remake it as a movie or TV show. Several other book series that didn’t succeed on screen initially—like His Dark Materials, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and Eragon (if Disney’s planned remake happens)—have gotten second chances recently. A new adaptation of Divergent, based on The Sixth Faction, would allow the story to finally reach its conclusion after the original film series was cut short. While it wouldn’t be a direct continuation of the previous movies, it would offer a fresh take on Veronica Roth’s world. The alternate-universe setting could also help avoid common reboot pitfalls, making The Sixth Faction a strong contender for a screen adaptation.

The Sixth Faction’s Premise Lends Itself to a Total Reboot

It’s usually tough to remake a well-known story, even if people didn’t love the first version. Often, audiences strongly connect the original actors with their characters, making it risky to recast those roles. This is a particular worry when considering a reboot of the story featuring Shailene Woodley and Theo James. Plus, if the original films had a unique style, changing that style too much in a reboot can feel strange and out of place.

A remake of The Sixth Faction could work really well because its story allows for a completely new look without ignoring the original Divergent movies. It wouldn’t erase what came before, making it easier for fans to accept a fresh take. This updated concept could even attract viewers who usually dislike reboots, as it would inherently offer something new. Given the previous Divergent series didn’t finish as planned, it’s best not to get too excited, but it would be great to see this dystopian franchise get another chance. If done right, it has the potential to be excellent.
