Nicolas Cage is known for taking on an incredible range of roles – truly, he’s worked in almost every genre imaginable. Starting with early TV appearances in the early 80s and continuing with upcoming projects like Spider-Noir, he’s also earned significant critical recognition, including multiple Academy Award nominations. The 1990s were especially pivotal for Cage, solidifying his status as an action movie star, and now one of his most famous action films from that decade is coming to Hulu.
The 1997 action film Con Air will be available to stream on Hulu starting May 1st. Directed by Simon West and starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich, this thrilling movie follows a daring prison break—but it all happens on a plane! Featuring a fantastic supporting cast including Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, and Dave Chappelle, Con Air was a box office success and has become a beloved cult classic. It even earned Academy Award nominations for its sound and original song.
Con Air Is Pure ‘90s Blockbuster Cheese (And That’s Why It’s Great)

Con Air is pure, over-the-top fun – delightfully cheesy in the best way. It’s full of lines and plot points that are almost too much, but it balances that with huge, impressive action and special effects. The fight scenes are particularly well-done, and you can expect plenty of explosions – it’s a Jerry Bruckheimer film, after all! The story itself is a bit outlandish: Nicolas Cage plays Cameron Poe, an ex-Army Ranger who accidentally killed someone in self-defense and was sent to prison. After eight years, he’s being transported home on a flight called “Con Air” when a group of fellow prisoners tries to take over the plane and escape.
Though Con Air is definitely a product of the 1990s, that’s a big part of what makes it so enjoyable. The over-the-top action and story are perfectly matched, creating a unique experience. The movie also features some incredibly well-done slow-motion shots during its spectacular explosions. Nicolas Cage gives a fantastic performance, even within the film’s wild premise, and all these elements combine to create a strangely compelling movie. It’s a film you probably wouldn’t find made today, but it still stands up incredibly well, which explains why it remains so popular.
1997 was a huge year for Nicolas Cage action movies, and Con Air was one of two particularly memorable ones. The other was Face/Off, which, like Con Air, is over-the-top, packed with thrilling action, and remains a classic. You can stream Face/Off on Peacock now, and Con Air will be available on Hulu in May.
