Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episodes 5 and 6 of the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord series. While Darth Maul is currently the focus of the new animated series Shadow Lord, one question about his story remains unanswered. The series, set a year after the rise of the Empire, shows Maul attempting to regain his power and find a new apprentice. Despite this, he seems to be overlooking a potentially powerful asset he already has.
After six episodes, the series Maul – Shadow Lord is effectively portraying the former Sith Lord’s intelligence and ruthless desire for revenge against those who wronged him during the Clone Wars.
We’re noticing disagreements among Maul’s supporters, which seem unnecessary. Previous Star Wars stories made it clear that Maul still possessed the Darksaber during this time, but it’s missing in the current story, and that raises valid questions about where the famous weapon is.
During Shadow Lord, Maul Is The Current Wielder Of The Darksaber (So Where Is It?)
Considering the story’s timeline, Darth Maul should still possess the Darksaber in the Shadow Lord story arc. This special blade was originally crafted by Tarre Vizsla, a unique figure who was both Mandalorian and Jedi, and lived during the final years of the Old Republic.
I remember when Maul defeated Pre Vizsla during the Clone Wars – it was brutal! He didn’t just win, he killed Vizsla and took the Darksaber. That weapon isn’t just cool-looking; it’s a really old symbol of power for the Mandalorians, basically meaning whoever holds it is in charge. Maul used it to try and take over Mandalore, and it definitely gave him an edge. It was a huge deal!
Despite being captured by Darth Sidious, Maul’s followers kept his special weapon safe for him after he escaped. However, by the time of the Siege of Mandalore – a major battle near the end of the Clone Wars and just before Revenge of the Sith – Maul had stopped using it.
However, official Star Wars stories show Maul continued to possess the Darksaber for quite some time. In the series Star Wars Rebels (which takes place after the events of Shadow Lord), Sabine Wren takes the Darksaber from Maul on the planet Dathomir and then gives it to Bo-Katan Kryze. Bo-Katan used the Darksaber to rally her people, but the weapon was later seized by Moff Gideon of the Empire.
The fact that the Darksaber hasn’t appeared in Shadow Lord is becoming increasingly obvious. If Maul still possesses the blade, it’s strange he isn’t wielding it, particularly with his Mandalorian mercenaries becoming restless due to unpaid wages and the growing Imperial presence. The Darksaber would be a powerful symbol to maintain control in this situation.
Will We See A Darksaber Appearance In Future Maul – Shadow Lord Episodes?
Throughout the Shadow Lord series, Maul consistently uses his signature double-bladed lightsaber, demonstrating his mastery of the weapon. However, the Darksaber could be a valuable asset, particularly since Rook Kast appears to be the only Mandalorian fully committed to Maul’s goals. With a second season of Maul – Shadow Lord already planned, it’s likely we’ll see the Darksaber appear at some point.
However, there are understandable reasons why Maul might have avoided using the Darksaber. The last time he wielded it, things went terribly wrong, leading to the deaths of his brother and mother. He likely didn’t want to revisit those painful memories.
Some argue that using the Darksaber could attract unwanted attention, though a double-bladed lightsaber isn’t exactly inconspicuous either. Whether or not Maul picks up the blade again, it would be great to finally get a clear explanation of the Darksaber’s history in future episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord.
New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
