PlayStation is expected to release its first potential Game of the Year contender for 2026 very soon. While several excellent games have already launched on PS5 this year, the most talked-about titles – including Nioh 3, Resident Evil Requiem, and Pragmata – have all been published by companies other than PlayStation itself. That’s about to change, with a new first-party release expected within the next week.
Early reviews are in for the new PS5 action game Saros, developed by Housemarque, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Like their 2021 hit Returnal, Saros blends fast-paced action with roguelike gameplay, but it’s actually receiving even better reviews. Currently, it holds a Metacritic score of 88/100, which is a fantastic achievement.
Saros has received incredibly positive reviews and quickly become one of the top five highest-rated games of 2026. Currently, only Resident Evil Requiem and Pokemon Pokopia have slightly higher scores on Metacritic. Importantly, Saros is the best-reviewed PlayStation 5 exclusive game released so far this year, demonstrating the continued strength of PlayStation’s internal development teams.
It’s uncertain whether Saros will still be a strong contender for Game of the Year by the end of 2026. Many highly anticipated games are still scheduled to come out this year, and they could also be in the running. These include Forza Horizon 6, Marvel’s Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and, notably, Grand Theft Auto 6.
Whether it wins Game of the Year or not, Saros is definitely a game you should check out. It launches on PS5 next week, April 30th. If you can’t wait, the Digital Deluxe Edition gives you 48 hours of early access, starting on April 28th.
