Sylvester Stallone & Robert De Niro’s 1990s Thriller Officially Being Remade With 1 Big Change

It’s amazing to look back at some films and see how many incredibly talented people contributed to them. A great example is the 1993 film True Romance. Directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun) and written by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill), it featured a phenomenal cast including Christian Slater (Heathers), Patricia Arquette (Severance), Dennis Hopper (Speed), Val Kilmer (Batman Forever), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), Brad Pitt (Fight Club), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Chris Penn (Reservoir Dogs), Bronson Pinchot (Perfect Strangers), Paul-Ben Victor (Lanterns), Tom Sizemore (Heat), Michael Rapaport (Higher Learning), and Christopher Walken (King of New York). Considering how successful each of these actors and writers became, True Romance really stands out as a remarkable gathering of major talent.

The 1997 film Cop Land shares similarities with True Romance: it’s a crime drama featuring a talented cast who have since become well-known, and it launched the career of a now-celebrated director. That director is James Mangold, who later directed popular films like The Wolverine, Logan, Ford v Ferrari, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While Cop Land wasn’t a blockbuster, it earned a respectable $63 million on a $15 million budget and, crucially, demonstrated Mangold’s skills in creating compelling stories with intense drama and action. The film offered nuanced depictions of police officers, criminals, and gangsters, just before HBO popularized that type of storytelling with shows like The Sopranos and The Wire.

And now, Cop Land is getting the same opportunity to tell its story like those shows did.

Cop Land Is The Latest Film In The Trend of TV Reboots

The 1997 film Cop Land is getting a new life as a TV series. James Mangold, known for directing films like Logan, will be heavily involved, writing, directing, and executive producing the show for Paramount Television, with Miramax Television also contributing. This is Mangold’s first time as a writer for television, though he has directed and produced TV shows before. The project is part of a larger deal Mangold made with Paramount, which recently merged with Skydance and may soon acquire Warner Bros. Robert Levine, who co-created the FX series The Old Man, will join Mangold as a co-writer and executive producer. Several networks are already interested in airing the new series.

The movie Cop Land has a complex and interesting story that would work well as a TV series. The film felt crowded with characters and storylines, exploring a town in New Jersey largely run by corrupt police officers who operate without oversight. When some officers start using drugs and turning on each other, their boss, Lieutenant Ray Donlan (Harvey Keitel), begins a violent crackdown. Sheriff Freddy Heflin (Sylvester Stallone), though physically limited and unable to be a regular officer, is deeply loyal to Donlan, who gave him a chance. But when the evidence of Donlan’s criminal activity becomes overwhelming, Freddy must overcome his limitations and fight for justice in his town, raising the question: who keeps the police accountable?

Casting the Cop Land TV series will be a real challenge. The original movie featured an incredibly impressive cast – one of the most star-studded since films like True Romance or Pulp Fiction. Director James Mangold brought in huge names like Harvey Keitel and Sylvester Stallone, but that’s just the beginning. Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro from Goodfellas both appear, along with filmmaker Peter Berg, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, Cathy Moriarty, John Spencer, Malik Yoba, Edie Falco, Paul Herman, Method Man of the Wu-Tang Clan, Tony Sirico, John Ventimiglia, and many more. You could barely watch a single scene of Cop Land without spotting a familiar face. That impressive cast was a major draw for the film – seeing actors known for playing tough guys as cops, or action heroes like Stallone in a more comedic role. The TV series will have a hard time recreating that unique and self-aware casting approach.
