Despite the recent Mummy film not performing well at the box office during its opening weekend, this could actually be a positive sign for the future of the franchise, and especially for the planned Mummy 4 starring Brendan Fraser. The Mummy has a long history, beginning with the original 1932 film. Over the years, it’s spawned many sequels, like The Mummy’s Hand (1940) and The Mummy’s Tomb (1942), even a comedic take with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy in 1955. The 1959 Hammer film The Mummy was actually the first time the series was rebooted.
The film The Mummy was successfully revived in 1999 as a big-budget adventure starring Brendan Fraser, combining humor, action, and classic horror elements. Director Stephen Sommers’ take proved popular, leading to two sequels and a spin-off series of five The Scorpion King movies. After a period of inactivity, the franchise was rebooted again in 2026 with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a much darker and more violent horror film. However, that reboot wasn’t successful, which is good news for Brendan Fraser’s upcoming new take on The Mummy.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’s Box Office Proves Brendan Fraser’s Franchise Reboot Makes More Sense

Although Lee Cronin’s The Mummy made $13 million during its opening weekend, placing third behind Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Bros. Movie shows it wasn’t a major success. This somewhat disappointing result suggests that giving the film an R-rating and emphasizing horror elements wasn’t the right move for the franchise.
Over the past few years, several filmmakers have tried to bring Universal’s classic monsters back to life with darker, more mature reboots. 2020’s The Invisible Man was a hit with both critics and audiences, but 2025’s Wolf Man showed this approach wasn’t a guaranteed success. Now, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is facing similar struggles. While it’s a significant improvement over the poorly received 2017 Mummy reboot, the new film suggests the Mummy movies from the late 90s and early 2000s were on the right track.
The Mummy Franchise Never Needed An R-Rating

The Mummy films have always been more about adventure than true horror, which explains why the Stephen Sommers movies are so popular. They feel more like a spin-off of Indiana Jones than anything from the Evil Dead series. Both the classic Mummy movies from the 1930s and 50s, and their more playful 90s remakes, prioritize exciting action over scary moments and genuine suspense.
Fans of The Mummy have a lot to look forward to! The Mummy 4 is scheduled for release in May 2028, and Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning to their iconic roles. John Hannah will also be back as a supporting character. The film will be directed by Radio Silence, known for their work on horror films like Scream (2022) and Ready or Not. Given the lukewarm response to the previous Mummy film, the directors should focus on capturing the original’s adventurous and lighthearted spirit in this new sequel.
