Timothy Olyphant’s Hit $1.7B Sci-Fi Franchise Series Gets New Season 3 Return Update

just got a promising season 3 update.

While many still remember Timothy Olyphant from his role in the FX series Justified, he recently starred in Alien, a new TV show created by Noah Hawley. This Alien series, which expands on the world of the original films by Ridley Scott, was both popular with critics and viewers, and a second season is currently being made.

Noah Hawley, the creator and showrunner of Alien: Earth, recently told Deadline he’s already planning the show’s future after season 2. While season 2 is scheduled to begin filming next month, Hawley has a clear idea of where he wants to take the story in season 3 and beyond, as he explained:

I have a clear vision for where I want to take things, though the timeline is uncertain. As long as we maintain a reasonable budget and keep our fans engaged, we can continue this for as long as we like. By investing in these properties, they have the potential to be successful for many years to come.

The first season of the show launched to a strong start, attracting 9.2 million viewers worldwide across FX, Hulu, and Disney+ in its first six days – a major success for FX. Critics loved Alien: Earth, and it currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

For decades, the Alien films have taken place on spaceships and far-off planets. Now, Noah Hawley’s new series brings the terrifying Xenomorphs to Earth. The story centers on a team of soldiers desperately trying to defend the planet after a strange ship crashes down. The cast includes Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, and Adarsh Gourav, among others.

Production on season 2 of Alien: Earth is starting soon, and it’s expected to return to television sometime in 2027. However, FX hasn’t officially announced a return date or renewed the show for any seasons beyond the next one.

Noah Hawley and FX clearly have a great partnership. He brought us the mind-bending Legion, which ran for three seasons, and he recently returned to the world of Fargo with a fantastic fifth season in 2023. It’s a collaboration that consistently delivers quality television, and I’m always excited to see what they come up with next.

According to a recent article in Deadline, Noah Hawley plans to create both a sixth season of Fargo and a TV series based on the Far Cry video game. Because Hawley continues to work with FX, it’s probable that Alien: Earth will be renewed for a third season and potentially beyond.

According to Hawley, the show’s success will ultimately depend on how many people watch it. While critics gave it a high score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are less enthusiastic, giving it a 65% rating on Popcornmeter. The show’s connection to the Alien franchise likely drew viewers in for the first season, but whether the show is good enough to keep them watching in future seasons remains to be seen – making season 2 a crucial test.

As a huge fan of the Alien universe, I’m really excited to see where season 2 of Alien: Earth takes us, and beyond! It’s pretty clear though, that this story isn’t going to be neatly tied up in just a few episodes. If Noah Hawley gets his wish, I’m hoping this show becomes a long-running fixture on TV – something we can enjoy for years to come.
