The original heroes are returning! While superhero shows have become incredibly popular recently, Heroes, a drama that aired before this current wave, is surprisingly back on top of the streaming charts. More than a decade after it ended, this often-overlooked and sometimes-debated series is quickly gaining fans again.
New data from FlixPatrol shows that Heroes is now the most downloaded movie on the Apple TV Store in the U.S. It’s also become a global hit, ranking as the eighth most-watched show worldwide – even surpassing popular series like Grey’s Anatomy. What’s surprising is that Heroes is currently only available for purchase or rental, making its sudden popularity even more remarkable.
Heroes Is the Best (and Worst) of the Superhero Genre
For a time, Heroes was the most popular superhero show on TV. It told the stories of ordinary people who suddenly developed superpowers, each figuring out what their new abilities meant. Throughout the first season, these individual stories gradually connected, eventually coming together in a satisfying way. This approach of starting with separate storylines was unique and foreshadowed how audiences would later enjoy larger, more complex superhero universes.
The show featured a cast of rising stars, many of whom have become well-known faces on television. Milo Ventimiglia, famous for his roles in Gilmore Girls and This Is Us, played a central character named Peter Petrelli. Jack Coleman portrayed the scheming villain, David Zyler. Other notable actors in Heroes included Hayden Panettiere, Kristen Bell, Ali Larter, Masi Oka, Adrian Pasdar, and Maggie Bell.
While the show Heroes started strong, most viewers felt it lost its appeal after the first season. The quality noticeably declined starting with Season 2, resulting in a lukewarm reception – it currently has a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a big contrast to the widespread praise the first season received. Heroes ultimately concluded in 2010 after four seasons.
Will Heroes Ever Come Back?
Though most agree that Heroes had a fantastic first season but declined in quality afterward, it remains beloved by many fans. The show helped popularize a then-uncommon genre and briefly became a major cultural trend. With different choices, Heroes could have stayed on top, but ultimately it didn’t.
The show briefly returned in 2015 with a thirteen-episode revival called Heroes Reborn. While it introduced a new group of characters, some original cast members also appeared. Sadly, Heroes Reborn was cancelled after just one season. Over the past ten years, there have been talks of a continuation, but nothing concrete ever materialized. Now, with the show gaining popularity on streaming platforms, fans are hopeful that Heroes might return to television sixteen years after its original finale.
Heroes is available to buy or rent on Apple TV+.
