I Love Cecil, But Invincible Can’t Keep Letting Him Get Away With This

Be warned: this article reveals major plot details from Invincible season 4, episode 8, “Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here.” If you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to do so before reading further.

In the final episode of Invincible season 4, Mark and Nolan returned to Earth and had separate conversations with Cecil. While Cecil was annoyed the Viltrumites weren’t fully beaten, he was much more understanding towards Mark, likely because of their past relationship and Nolan’s actions.

Despite feeling sorry for Mark, Cecil keeps displaying a major weakness, and the show shouldn’t continue to excuse it. Considering the serious and bleak ending of Invincible season 4, it’s understandable that Cecil is concerned about Earth’s future, as it’s his responsibility to protect it.

Honestly, learning there were beings capable of destroying Earth with a clear intent to attack would terrify anyone, especially someone like the director of the Global Defense Agency. But watching him lecture Nolan and point out the obvious to Mark felt a little off to me, considering the huge mistakes he had made previously. It just struck me as hypocritical, given his own track record.

Given the difficult choices he’s had to make throughout the series, Cecil deserves some understanding. However, allowing Conquest to live and then escape really shows he isn’t the most insightful character in season 4 of Invincible. Because he avoided the fallout from his mistake with Conquest, it feels hypocritical for him to criticize others.

Mark almost died when the Viltrumites came back, and he was unable to fight for two months. Since Cecil constantly criticizes others’ mistakes, it’s time someone pointed out his own failures.

Cecil Had No Right To Be Lecturing Others In Invincible Season 4’s Finale (Even If He Was Right)

Cecil might have been correct that Mark and Nolan’s actions upset the Viltrumites and made Earth more at risk, but he’s hardly one to give advice. He was much more understanding with Mark, offering reassurance and making sure he got help dealing with his past trauma.

Despite his annoyance, he began speaking to Mark by saying, “I’m not happy about this.” He then added that Mark and his father had created a problem without fully resolving it. When speaking to Nolan, he was much more critical, sarcastically saying, “Great job,” to express his anger about the fact that nearly 40 Viltrumites were still at large.

He also accused Nolan of treating Earth like his personal therapy session and angrily demanded he leave, even though Omni-Man had bravely fought in the war. While this doesn’t excuse Nolan’s terrible actions, it’s ironic that Cecil would act morally superior after losing Mark’s trust in season 3.

Furthermore, his disastrous handling of Conquest and secret use of outdated Invincible designs to build ReAnimen prove he’s in no position to criticize others. While his arguments might have some merit, Cecil should remember that Mark, Nolan, and the entire Invincible team risked their lives to begin with.

The Graysons could have sided with the Viltrumites, leaving Earth vulnerable and Cecil powerless to protect it. While Cecil is justified in not forgiving Omni-Man, now isn’t the time to push away their remaining powerful allies, particularly after his error almost cost one of them their life.

Invincible Season 5 Needs To Hold Cecil Accountable For His Conquest Mistake

I think Cecil is one of the best characters in Invincible, and it’s easy to see why so many fans love him. However, he needs to take responsibility for letting Conquest live and escape. He told Mark that Conquest was dead, but secretly kept him imprisoned in a GDA facility until he recovered.

It wasn’t a surprise when Conquest easily escaped, forcing Mark to deal with the aftermath of their second fight in space. While Conquest did eventually die in season 4 of Invincible, he almost killed Mark and very nearly Oliver too, highlighting just how dangerous his escape was.

Mark didn’t address Cecil’s behavior right after getting back to Earth because he was still dealing with his own difficult experiences, but he really needs to talk to him about it in the next season. Cecil is quick to point out mistakes made by Mark and the Guardians, and he has very high expectations, making him a tough person to satisfy.

Look, I get that Cecil isn’t perfect, and honestly, it’s good to see him challenged. I really want Mark to call him out on letting Conquest live – it would be so satisfying to see Cecil actually have to explain himself for once! Plus, even though he’s incredibly stubborn, maybe this will be what Cecil needs to finally grow as a director. It’s about time someone held him accountable.

If Mark doesn’t question him thoroughly when Invincible comes back next year, Cecil might not find out that Conquest has returned, and it could easily be forgotten. That’s why it’s important Cecil experiences some consequences of his own actions – it could help him grow into an even better leader.
