5 Most Devastating Game Shutdowns Fans Are Still Upset About Today

In the past, you could only play a video game if you had the console and a physical copy. Today, with more games being released as online services and digital downloads, games can be taken offline with very little notice. Often, this happens when a game isn’t attracting enough players. While server closures aren’t always a surprise, losing access to a beloved game can still be incredibly upsetting for fans, and those experiences can be hard to forget.

It’s been really disappointing lately to see some hyped games like Concord and Highguard get cancelled so quickly after release. While those are shocking, it’s actually the games that shut down after we’ve had a chance to really fall in love with them that hurt the most. I’m still bummed about a few, and I know a lot of other fans are too. Here are 5 games that people still fondly remember, even though they’re sadly no longer around.

5) City of Heroes

Launched in 2004, City of Heroes was a massively multiplayer online game where players designed their own superheroes. Players could then join forces with others – forming their own superhero teams – to battle crime and complete missions. The game proved popular, receiving several updates and a standalone expansion called City of Villains, before its servers were ultimately shut down.

When City of Heroes closed in 2012 after its developers, NCSoft and Paragon Studios, split, many fans were heartbroken. It would rank higher on a list of disappointing game closures, but there’s a positive twist. In 2024, NCSoft allowed Homecoming Servers, LLC – who had been running a fan-based server for years – to officially host City of Heroes. While it’s not exactly the same as the original, the game is still playable today.

4) Angry Birds

While it might seem different from the other games here, Angry Birds is one that many people still remember fondly. Released in 2009, it was one of the first mobile games to become a huge viral hit. What made it special was its simple, addictive gameplay, and it came out before mobile games relied heavily on in-app purchases.

While the Angry Birds franchise is still popular, the very first game is no longer available. It closed down in 2019, and even a remake didn’t last long – it was removed from stores after just one year. You can still enjoy newer Angry Birds games, like Angry Birds Reloaded on Apple Arcade, but the original is sadly gone.

3) Disney Heroes: Battle Mode

I know this is tough news, especially for those who still enjoy the game. Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, which launched in 2018, will officially shut down on May 31st, 2026. It’s a free-to-play RPG where you collect and battle with famous Disney characters. While not as widely popular as Disney Dreamlight Valley, it had a loyal player base.

Despite being an older game, its sudden closure still came as a shock and disappointment to players. It continued to receive consistent, new content updates until the very end. When the servers are finally switched off on May 31st, the game will no longer be playable.

2) Star Wars Galaxies

Launched in 2003, Star Wars Galaxies was a massive online role-playing game set in the famous Star Wars galaxy. While the game included characters like Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca, players didn’t play as these heroes. Instead, they created their own unique characters and were free to explore the Star Wars universe in a vast, open-world environment.

Man, it was a real bummer when Galaxies shut down back in 2011. The license ran out, which was crazy considering how many of us Star Wars fans were still playing! Even after the official servers went offline, the community tried to keep it going with fan-run servers, but it wasn’t the same. It really felt like losing the first proper Star Wars MMO, and honestly, it still stings to think about.

1) Marvel Heroes

Looking back at these games, it’s clear that titles with “heroes” in the name sometimes don’t last. Marvel Heroes was a free-to-play online game featuring characters from Marvel comics. It first came out on computers in 2013, and later on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017. Unfortunately, the console versions didn’t stay available for very long.

Even though fans enjoyed the game, Disney decided to end its relationship with the game’s maker, Gazillion Entertainment. This caused the game to shut down for good in November 2017, only a few months after it became available on gaming consoles. While critics had varying opinions about it, the game got better over time and built a loyal community of players before it was discontinued.
