5 X-Men Villains Who Deserve to Be Big Bads Again

The X-Men are a huge part of Marvel’s success, and a big reason is their ever-growing number of characters. With so many X-Men, there’s someone for every fan to connect with. Like any good superhero team, the X-Men also have fantastic villains – some of the best in all of Marvel. Magneto is often considered one of the greatest comic book villains ever, and characters like Mister Sinister and Cassandra Nova are also incredibly popular. While the X-Men have a wealth of compelling villains, not all of them get the attention they deserve.

As a longtime X-Men fan, I’ve been thinking about villains who truly deserve another shot at being major threats. We’ve seen bits and pieces of these characters over the years, a fight here, a scheme there, but it’s been ages since one of them felt like a genuine, world-ending danger. They have the potential to be so much more than just obstacles for a single hero. So, I’m taking a look at five X-Men baddies who could easily carry a huge, event-level storyline and really shake things up.

5) Mojo

Mojo is a wildly popular, yet deeply disturbing, TV host from another dimension. He keeps his viewers hooked by exploiting and enslaving others, which is what makes him such a memorable villain. Always chasing ratings, Mojo has kidnapped almost every Marvel superhero, especially the X-Men. Though he may be spineless in a literal sense, he’s a genuinely dangerous foe. He’s frightening because he perfectly blends the ruthless ambition of Hollywood with pure evil. He recently appeared as the villain in NYX (2024), and it’s high time Mojo brought his twisted show to a larger audience, perhaps a major movie or pay-per-view event, and challenged the X-Men once more.

4) Onslaught

Onslaught is essentially the physical manifestation of Magneto’s intense hatred and Charles Xavier’s hidden anger, combining their powers with those of every mutant he’s ever absorbed. While a compelling villain in concept, Onslaught hasn’t always been well-executed in stories. However, with both Magneto and Xavier currently experiencing positive character growth – Magneto embracing heroism and Xavier regaining his optimism – the time feels right for his return. A confrontation with Onslaught would allow these two iconic figures to directly confront and overcome their inner struggles in a truly spectacular way.

3) Mastermind

Mastermind is a long-standing member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, best known for manipulating Jean Grey and inadvertently causing the emergence of the Dark Phoenix. While not physically imposing, he excels at psychological warfare, targeting the X-Men on a personal level. He prefers to work subtly, sowing discord and eroding the team’s trust in one another, potentially dismantling them from within. He presents a unique mental challenge for the X-Men, requiring strong teamwork and intelligence to defeat – a refreshing change from their usual battles against world-ending threats.

2) Shadow King

The Shadow King is a hugely significant figure in X-Men history. He was the first mutant villain Professor X ever faced, and that battle motivated him to create the X-Men – a team dedicated to protecting both humans and mutants. But the Shadow King isn’t just a mutant; he’s a terrifying, nightmare-like entity who uses a human body as a vessel. He’s consistently been a major threat to the X-Men, and a story arc in Resurrection of Magneto suggested he might be connected to all of their other cosmic enemies. The Shadow King has long-term plans to plunge the world into darkness and destroy all life, and the X-Men’s fight against him could lead to a completely new direction for the team – one unlike anything they’ve experienced before.

1) Sublime

Sublime isn’t simply a dangerous enemy; he threatens the very existence of humanity. This ancient, intelligent bacteria evolved over billions of years, unknowingly created by the first mutant civilization. His plan was to infect everyone, except mutants, and he actively fostered the fear and hatred of mutants – the same issues the X-Men constantly fight against – to ensure his success. He’s a living embodiment of hate, dedicated to spreading death and distrust, which directly opposes everything the X-Men believe in. He has the power to ignite a conflict fueled by hate, ironically creating the opportunity for the X-Men to champion love and acceptance. He’s the disease, and the X-Men are the remedy.
