How Ryan Reynolds Has Supported Blake Lively Through Her Legal Battle

A surefire sign that it’s business as usual for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds on the homefront?

Pranks are still happening! Lively said her kids tried to pull off a big one on April Fool’s Day, and their joke involved covering the toilet with plastic wrap – a classic, if messy, move.

The mother of James (11), Inez (9), Betty (6), and Olin (3) jokingly posted on Instagram that she regretted teaching her kids to read a calendar, implying they were always aware of special occasions and anticipating events.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds often playfully tease each other publicly, and it seems to be how they show affection. However, Reynolds has been seriously supportive of Lively throughout her difficult and ongoing legal dispute with Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the director of It Ends With Us.

With Lively continuing to pursue her case – and her final three claims scheduled for a trial starting May 18th – Reynolds has expressed strong support.

Ryan Reynolds recently shared how incredibly proud he is of his wife. Speaking on NBC’s Today Show, he explained that people don’t fully understand what she goes through, and he admires her strong character and how she consistently lives with such integrity in all aspects of her life.

As a longtime follower of this case, I was really following the recent court decision closely. It’s frustrating to see that most of Lively’s claims against Baldoni were dismissed – especially the serious allegations of sexual harassment. However, I’m relieved that the judge is allowing her claims of breaking their contract, retaliating against her, and helping others retaliate to move forward. It’s not a complete loss, and I’m hoping this means she’ll still have a chance to get justice on those key issues.

After the ruling, Lively stated that the core issue of her case remained active. In an Instagram post on April 3rd, she explained that she only pursued legal action because of ongoing retaliation she experienced for requesting a safe and respectful workplace for herself and her colleagues. She emphasized that a lawsuit was the last thing she wanted.

Baldoni, who previously sued Lively and Reynolds for $400 million in a defamation case that was dismissed last June, maintains he did nothing wrong.

Not that Reynolds needed to be his wife’s co-defendant in a lawsuit to have her back.

Reynolds explained in a speech on January 7, 2025, that stories featuring women often face unfair expectations, mirroring the pressures women experience in real life. These stories frequently demand that female characters be flawless, conceal their power, and either change themselves to fit expectations or simply try to appease others.

Although he was publicly discussing the musical Wicked, Lively’s recent lawsuit – and the negative reaction it had already gotten from the public – was likely on his mind as well.

When previously sealed court records from the case were released last January—including a text to Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana Barroso, where Reynolds joked about making a movie about the book and movie It Ends With Us—he remained unfazed.

A representative for Ryan Reynolds told Puck News that, of course, he supported his wife. “Any husband would support his wife and the mother of his children,” they said. Reynolds reportedly observed his wife consistently and privately addressing sexual harassment, and was dismayed to see her face repercussions for doing so.

You know, from my perspective, it’s really powerful to see someone like Ryan not just acknowledging a wrong, but actually feeling he didn’t do enough to stand up for what’s right. He’s deeply committed to ensuring a safe and respectful work environment – one where everyone, including his wife and colleagues, can feel secure and free from harassment and retaliation. And that’s a belief he holds firmly, now and always. It’s about basic human dignity, and he’s a true advocate for that.

Okay, so Ryan Reynolds, honestly, he always supports Blake Lively, like, always. When she throws herself into a huge project – and she always does, she’s amazing! – he’s not just sitting back and letting her do it alone. He’s right there with her, cheering her on and getting involved. It’s seriously the cutest, and it’s just so clear how much he believes in her and everything she does. I just love seeing them as a team!

He’s very supportive and takes an active role in what I do,” the Gossip Girl actress told TopMob News in 2014, when discussing his involvement with her now-defunct lifestyle brand, Preserve. “We’re both fully engaged in each other’s projects and lives.”

I always share my ideas with him first, and I really appreciate that he pushes me to be better. I trust his judgment, even when he questions my thinking.

Ultimately, Lively said, “It’s nice to have a partner in everything.”

And she knew even before they tied the knot in 2012 that she had a best friend for life.

She told Marie Claire in 2016 that her friendship with him was unlike anything she’d experienced before. She felt she could care for him just as deeply as she loved him.

Reynolds shared that he and the other person were already good friends, and their connection has only grown stronger over time, as he told Extra in 2021, “We really liked each other before as friends beforehand. We like each other even more so now.”

Although he’s limited in what he can discuss publicly regarding Lively’s difficult experience and the upcoming trial, his behavior has clearly demonstrated his support.

The couple made their first public appearance together on a red carpet in February 2025 at the SNL 50th Anniversary Celebration. Reynolds playfully referenced the recent media attention, and since then, they’ve been seen together constantly, whether they’re out in New York City or enjoying a Wrexham A.F.C. game in Wales.

And Reynolds’ goal is to always be there for his family.

Family is the most important thing in my life,” he shared on Sunday Sitdown Live. “At the end of the day, those are the relationships that will truly matter.”
