Thanks to the new movie Avengers: Doomsday, it’s clearer how Tony Stark could return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it took eleven years to build up to Avengers: Endgame and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios is moving faster with the current Multiverse Saga. Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release in December 2027—only six years after Phase 4 began with WandaVision. But before that, Avengers: Doomsday is setting the stage for the next big story arc in the MCU, uniting heroes like the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in a major battle against Doctor Doom.
When the new Joe and Anthony Russo film was announced, many fans were doubtful, especially given the complicated nature of the Multiverse Saga. The news that Chris Evans would reprise his role as Steve Rogers didn’t fully ease concerns that the movie might negatively impact the satisfying conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. However, the trailer shown at CinemaCon for Avengers: Doomsday seemed to change opinions. Robert Downey Jr.’s return isn’t about bringing Iron Man back from the dead; he’s playing a different character – Doctor Doom. But a recent announcement from Marvel Studios now makes it possible for Stark to reappear in the MCU in some form.
Avengers: Endgame’s Re-release Means New Tony Stark Scenes

Following Marvel Studios’ presentation at CinemaCon 2026, it was revealed that when Avengers: Endgame returns to cinemas in September, it will include brand new scenes. These scenes will connect directly to the plot of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. While details are still scarce, we don’t yet know what these added scenes will be or who will be in them, it’s likely they’ll set up events for the sequel. This makes sense, as Avengers: Doomsday is confirmed to take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Since the upcoming scenes don’t have specific requirements, Marvel Studios could add moments showing Tony Stark before his sacrifice in the battle for Earth. Avengers: Endgame had a lot of ground to cover, so it had to carefully choose which storylines to develop fully and which to move through quickly. Many fans have discussed how quickly Stark solved time travel, and Marvel could expand on this point in the film, particularly if it connects to the events of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
The line from Tony Stark, “you mess with time, it tends to mess back,” could be explored further in future Avengers films. Given that the current Marvel storyline focuses on time travel and alternate realities, this quote could gain new meaning, perhaps even hinting that Iron Man foresaw the danger Doctor Doom poses to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, years after the defeat of Thanos.
Why Additional Tony Stark Scenes In Endgame Might Be Vital For Doomsday

This approach helps the filmmakers – the Russos, and writers Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely – establish a solid foundation for the story. Unlike the previous ‘Infinity Saga,’ most of them joined the ‘Multiverse Saga’ only when they started working on the next Avengers film. This makes it challenging to build a cohesive, long-term story that would justify a major conclusion in Avengers: Doomsday. By subtly hinting at future events all the way back to Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios can help smooth over the sometimes-disorganized feel of the Multiverse Saga.
Re-releasing Avengers: Endgame with added scenes could cleverly hint at a connection between Doctor Doom and Tony Stark before the release of Avengers: Doomsday. Even though Doctor Doom will likely wear his mask throughout most of the new movie, he’ll probably be unmasked at some point, revealing a striking resemblance to Iron Man. This could spark questions not only from fans, but also from MCU characters who knew Stark well – like Thor, Captain America, and Doctor Strange. Adding a subtle clue about this potential connection in Avengers: Endgame would be a smart way to set it up.
Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. was already filming on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, meaning they didn’t need to re-hire him to film additional scenes for Avengers: Endgame. The same is true for Chris Evans, as the upcoming re-release of the 2019 film will probably include new information about what happened to his character after the Infinity Stones saga. Now that both actors have returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios could really capitalize on their involvement.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
