A beloved game from the Sega Genesis, originally released in 1991, is now available on today’s gaming systems. 1991 was a breakout year for the Genesis, establishing it as a strong rival to the SNES. The success was largely due to the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog, but games like Streets of Rage, ToeJam & Earl, and Phantasy Star 3 also significantly expanded the console’s game selection. Now, another popular title from that era has been brought back with a new version.
This week, publisher Hamster released the classic arcade brawler Street Smart on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Originally launched in arcades in 1989, the game quickly gained a following. Later, developer SNK brought it to the Sega Genesis in 1991, and it’s been playable on that console ever since – until now, with this new multi-platform release.
The latest installment in Hamster Corporation’s “Arcade Archives” series is a new version of Street Smart, bringing a classic arcade game to modern consoles. Like other games in the series, this release offers the original gameplay experience with updated features like adjustable difficulty levels and new visual settings. You can find Street Smart on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and both Nintendo Switch models.
The game follows a karate master and a wrestler as they journey across America to settle a debate: who’s the best fighter? The game’s story explains that in a time when strength was all that mattered, these two will prove who reigns supreme. Players can team up with a friend in co-op mode, then compete head-to-head. Winning unlocks rewards and the admiration of beautiful women!
After being exclusive to the Sega Genesis for 35 years, it’s great that Street Smart is now available on modern consoles. If you’re looking for a classic beat ’em up from the Genesis days, Street Smart is definitely worth a look, and it’s quite affordable, costing between $7.99 and $13.49 depending on where you buy it.
