Video games originated in the United States, but Japan is where the industry truly flourished, particularly in the 1970s and 80s. Companies like Sega, Namco, Konami, and Nintendo released many groundbreaking games during this time, and Japan has consistently been a leader in game development ever since. While a lot of these games made their way to the West, thousands of fantastic Japanese titles have remained exclusive to Japan. We’ve searched through them and picked five of the best that never had an official U.S. release, presented here in random order.
1) Senjō no Varukyuria 3: Unrecorded Chronicles

I finally got around to checking out Valkyria Chronicles III, or Senjō no Varukyuria 3: Unrecorded Chronicles as it was originally called. It came out back in 2011 for the PSP and plays a lot like the first two games, which I loved. The story takes place at the same time as the original Valkyria Chronicles, but it follows a totally different squad – a black-ops unit made up of soldiers who’ve messed up, fighting for Gallia during the war. It was a big hit in Japan and even got an anime and manga, but it never officially made its way over here. Luckily, Valkyria Chronicles 4 did come to the States, and some amazing fans actually translated VC3 into English if you managed to snag the Japanese version. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it to experience the full story!
2) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner

Originally released in 1995 for the Sega Saturn (and later the PSP), Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner is the first game in the Devil Summoner series, and part of the larger Megami Tensei universe. Though popular in Japan, it was never officially released in the United States. The game combines the atmosphere of a noir detective story with supernatural and demonic themes. Gameplay includes turn-based combat and first-person exploration. Its success led to a TV series and several sequels, but it remains unavailable in Western markets.
3) Front Mission 5: Scars Of The War

Released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, Front Mission 5: Scars of the War is a strategy RPG developed by Square Enix. It’s the fifth main game in the Front Mission series and continues the series’ tradition of a connected, unfolding story. While originally only available in Japan, a fan-created English patch came out in 2009, allowing those with a Japanese copy of the game to experience it in English. It’s a fantastic game, but newcomers might find it a bit overwhelming, as it’s the fifth installment and assumes some familiarity with previous titles.
4) Tobal 2

In 1997, Square released a fighting game for the PlayStation called Tobal 2, a follow-up to Tobal no. 1. What made Tobal 2 stand out was its huge selection of 200 playable characters – an astonishing number for a fighting game at the time. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t available to players in the United States. While the reason for this remains uncertain, it was likely due to strong competition from popular franchises like Tekken and Mortal Kombat, which made it difficult for a new fighting game to gain traction.
5) Policenauts

Policenauts is a graphic adventure game created and directed by Hideo Kojima, the mind behind Metal Gear Solid. Originally released in 1994 for the NEC PC-9821, it was later adapted for the 3DO, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn. The game takes place in the mid-21st century and follows an astronaut who becomes a detective, investigating the murder of his former wife. While planned for release in English, it was unfortunately canceled, and has never been officially released outside of Japan. A fan translation in 2009 allowed some Western players to experience the game, but the community remains relatively small.
