The Jedi mind trick is one of the most well-known abilities in the Star Wars universe. It first appeared in A New Hope, famously used by Obi-Wan Kenobi to deceive stormtroopers and allow him and Luke Skywalker to pass by undetected. It’s a remarkably versatile power for the Jedi, helping them overcome many challenges. Throughout the films, we see examples like Luke infiltrating Jabba the Hutt’s palace, Qui-Gon Jinn getting a ride from the Gungans, and Rey freeing herself from restraints on Starkiller Base.
While Jedi mind tricks are powerful, they aren’t foolproof. They mainly work on people who are easily influenced, which is why Watto resisted Qui-Gon Jinn’s attempt to use one during their negotiation. This limitation is a good thing – it prevents mind tricks from being an all-powerful solution to any problem. Recently, the comic Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord revealed another weakness: mind tricks don’t work on groups of people.
Maul – Shadow Lord Reveals Jedi Mind Tricks Have Limited Range

The fifth episode of Shadow Lord, titled “Chapter 5: Inquisition,” sees the Empire arrive on the planet Janix, intent on seizing control and hunting for Maul. This creates more problems for Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara, two recent survivors of Order 66, who were hoping to lay low until things calmed down. They initially planned to escape by sneaking onto a train, but their plans are complicated when stormtroopers arrive at the station to question people about Maul and check identification. Eeko-Dio uses a mind trick to convince one of the troopers they’ve already checked their IDs, allowing them to pass. While this is a familiar Star Wars trope, Shadow Lord offers a fresh take on the classic scene.
As Eeko-Dio and Devon leave, another stormtrooper questions his coworker about letting the Jedi go without verifying their identities. This is a humorous moment, playing on the familiar trope of incompetent stormtroopers, and it demonstrates a key weakness of Jedi mind tricks. Eeko-Dio’s trick only worked on the specific stormtrooper he targeted, not everyone at the station. The Jedi hoped to disappear into the crowd, but one trooper happened to be watching closely. This trooper wasn’t affected by the mind trick because he observed it from a distance – it seems the trick only works in direct, personal encounters.
Basically, the Jedi mind trick seems to work best on small groups of soldiers who are on their own. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan uses it on a few stormtroopers, and none of them question why he and Luke are allowed to leave. This suggests the trick either affected everyone nearby, or the other soldiers didn’t want to challenge what their leader permitted. We see something similar in The Phantom Menace when Qui-Gon convinces Boss Nass – even if the other Gungans weren’t directly influenced, they simply accepted their leader’s decision.
The idea of resistance to Jedi mind tricks isn’t new to Star Wars. We saw it as early as the original movies with Jabba the Hutt, who angrily dismissed Luke Skywalker’s attempt to use the Force on Bib Fortuna while negotiating Han and Chewbacca’s release. It makes sense that a powerful crime boss like Jabba would be strong-willed enough to resist. Interestingly, stormtroopers have often fallen for mind tricks throughout the Star Wars saga. Given that the Empire views stormtroopers as expendable, it’s unlikely they’d receive training to defend against such powers. As shown in the comic Maul – Shadow Lord, stormtroopers will even point out when a fellow soldier is being affected by a mind trick if they are far enough away to avoid it themselves.
