Naoki Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy XIV and widely known as Yoshi-P, has stated he doesn’t want the game to suffer the same fate as another popular older online game.
So, at the Fan Fest in Anaheim, Yoshi-P just dropped some huge news! Apparently, the next expansion is going to include a totally revamped, more streamlined combat system. It sounds like they’re making things a lot easier to pick up and play, which is awesome!
Players will now be able to choose which combat system they prefer: the familiar ‘Reborn’ system, or the simpler, updated ‘Evolved’ system.
The announcement that all future Jobs would only work with the Evolved system caused some quiet reactions from the audience.
During a press conference Friday night, Yoshi-P discussed the recent changes, drawing a comparison to what happened with the game Star Wars Galaxies.

Yoshi-P asked if anyone in the audience remembered the game Star Wars Galaxies, then added, “If you played it, you probably know why it ended up shutting down.”
The New Game Enhancements (NGEs) were updates released for Galaxies in November 2005. Players felt these changes made the game simpler and less engaging, which caused a significant drop in the number of people playing.
“I actually really liked Star Wars Galxies and its game design,” he explained.
They made changes to improve the game for players, but instead of building on what was already there, they completely overhauled the existing system.
Honestly, people were really upset about that, and I’ve seen a lot of players talking about it like it was a total disaster. It really bummed everyone out.
Yoshi-P discussed the challenges of maintaining Final Fantasy XIV, particularly how to keep the game exciting after so many years while still honoring what players love about it.
Since the very first Final Fantasy XIV, we’ve been developing this game alongside players for 15 years – or 13 years if counting from the relaunch, A Realm Reborn. Over that time, players have become incredibly familiar with the game and the systems we’ve built together.
From the beginning, I decided against making any abrupt changes to what we were already doing.
I also made it clear to Yokozawa Sato and the team that, while we were developing the ‘Evolved’ mode, it was very important to me that we continue to support the ‘Reborn’ mode as well.
We’ll keep refining and improving things after the Evercold update. While we continue developing the Evolved system, let’s also focus on fixing and polishing what we already have.
Here’s hoping Evolved Jobs herald another decade of FF14, and not the beginning of a slow decline.
