Platinum Trophy #22 (and #23 I guess): Bugsnax
Date Earned: 4th November 2020 (and also 25th November 2020)
Dopamine Index:
I’m really getting into collecting trophies, and surprisingly, Bugsnax is the game that’s sparked that side of me.
Okay, so this game is a bit of a special case for me. I actually got to review Bugsnax twice – first on the PS4, and then again when it came out as one of the very first games on the PS5! It was really cool to see how it played on both consoles.
This is my first PlayStation 5 platinum trophy feature, although it wasn’t the first one I actually unlocked. I’m covering them a little out of order to avoid making you watch two videos about the same game.
Also, I did earn the Platinum Trophy in Bugsnax twice, and it wasn’t due to the trophies automatically unlocking on my PS5 – I actively earned it both times by completing all the requirements.
The worst part is I don’t really have an explanation for my actions.
What’s the point? I’m starting to wonder as I write this – it feels like I’m just met with indifference. I have no answers, no inspiration, just a blank space.
Honestly, I think I just really enjoyed Bugsnax because it’s a genuinely fun game, and I’m a sucker for those! It’s probably that straightforward, really.
I mean look at this:
Bugsnax is a delightfully weird, smart, and hilarious game – I immediately loved it! Knowing it’s made by the team behind Octodad: Dadliest Catch definitely made me excited from the very first trailer.
The game isn’t perfect, but I was completely hooked by its wild concept, lighthearted humor, and collectible creatures. It really stands out from everything else I’ve played, and still does.
Exploring the island and finding new Bugsnax felt a lot like the excitement and wonder of discovering Pokémon in the classic monster-collecting RPGs.
Even though the setting is completely different, the monsters are incredibly creative in their design and behavior, and the ways you capture them are really clever. It’s lighthearted and a lot of fun.
I haven’t really explained what makes this game so enjoyable – it’s the reason I completed all of its achievements not once, but twice, within just a few weeks.
I still don’t know exactly why, but considering how hectic things were when the PS5 came out, and the fact that I rarely revisit games, I must have been completely absorbed by Bugsnax and didn’t want to stop playing. I was really captivated by the world and characters!
I tested both the PS4 and PS5 versions, but I didn’t feel the need to play through the entire game again on the PS5. The updates were mainly performance improvements, quicker loading times, and features utilizing the DualSense controller – things I could evaluate fairly quickly.
I guess I was just in it for the love of the game, literally — but also, Trophies!
Since I’ve already replayed the entire game, I might as well go for the platinum trophy. I’ll earn most of the other achievements anyway, so it makes sense to complete everything.
Cheers, Bugsnax.
