The Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges since 2019. Its current storyline, the Multiverse Saga, hasn’t performed as well as the highly successful Infinity Saga.
The series has seen some big hits recently, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, one of its most acclaimed projects from after Endgame wasn’t considered part of the main storyline.
The MCU Needs More Marvel Spotlight Projects
Fans agree that Marvel needs to create more projects like those released under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner. While shows directly connected to the larger MCU, such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, are good in their own way, ‘Marvel Spotlight’ is a smarter approach for Disney+. It allows for smaller, character-focused stories – the kind that really shine on television – instead of relying on the huge spectacle better suited for movie theaters.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t used its ‘Marvel Spotlight’ branding very often recently. Besides Echo, Wonder Man is the only other project to receive this designation. Although the Wonder Man miniseries wasn’t a huge hit, it demonstrated a good approach – focusing on a less famous character in a more contained story, which is something Marvel Studios usually excels at.
Looking back, I think Marvel’s ‘Special Presentations’ actually fit really nicely under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner – especially considering that’s what they’re calling things now with Echo. These projects really let us dive into characters outside the main MCU storyline, telling self-contained stories you don’t need to know anything about the wider universe to enjoy. Even The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, while connected to James Gunn’s Guardians films, feels like a little side adventure focusing on characters we don’t always get to see much of in the main movies.
Marvel Spotlight finally delivers the kind of TV shows the Marvel Cinematic Universe needed all along. Previous Marvel TV projects were either too complex or didn’t keep the promises they made to viewers. Marvel Spotlight offers a more grounded and practical approach to television within the MCU, and it’s a great model for future stories after the Multiverse Saga concludes.
What Other MCU Characters Could Get Marvel Spotlight Projects?
Currently, Marvel doesn’t have any officially announced plans for new Marvel Spotlight projects. But, after the positive reception to Wonder Man, Marvel Studios should definitely continue using this format. They should follow the example set by Wonder Man and create standalone stories focused on individual characters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already introduced plenty of characters who would be great for this kind of project.
Isaiah Bradley, a character featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World, would be a great subject for a limited series on Disney+ as part of the Marvel Spotlight collection. His compelling story – serving as a secret Captain America during the Cold War and then being betrayed by the U.S. government – would be fantastic to explore on screen.
Following the success of Werewolf by Night, Marvel could further develop its supernatural elements. Characters with complex backgrounds, like those found in the Marvel Spotlight series, would be a great way to do this. The cosmic side of the MCU also has potential, and characters like Nova, Adam Warlock, and Eros could be used to explore it further.
Fans are eager for more self-contained stories, and the upcoming special featuring Jon Bernthal as the Punisher is a great opportunity to showcase the grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner. This could lead to even more stories focusing on that part of the Marvel Universe.
Marvel’s ‘Spotlight’ banner has a lot of untapped potential, and the MCU should definitely explore it further. Shows have demonstrated that Disney+ is a great platform for telling more complex, character-focused stories that wouldn’t necessarily succeed in theaters. Marvel Studios has finally realized this, and it’s not too late to lean into this approach. Future Disney+ series should prioritize the ‘Spotlight’ brand and really take advantage of what the television format offers.
