A key creator of the Netflix live-action series One Piece has revealed that a significant character will appear in the upcoming season, and explained why they weren’t included in Season 2. Netflix is currently developing a third season of One Piece which will adapt the Alabasta saga from Eiichiro Oda’s manga. The new season will introduce even more characters to the live-action adaptation, adding to the many new faces viewers met in Season 2.
Joe Tracz, the showrunner for Netflix’s One Piece, recently told IGN that Karoo, Princess Vivi’s duck, was originally planned for the second season. However, Karoo won’t appear until season three. Tracz explained that including Karoo earlier would have made Vivi’s undercover work with Baroque Works less believable.
Why Karoo Was Cut From Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action Series
You know, Karoo was actually planned for Season 2 from the very beginning! We had him in the first draft, but there was a point where I almost walked off the show if we had to cut him. I’m a huge Karoo fan! Sadly, we did end up having to make that tough call, and we tried to justify it with a story reason. Honestly, it just felt a little unbelievable that Vivi would risk bringing her pet duck along on an undercover mission. It would have made Baroque Works seem less competent, and we really wanted to maintain their reputation as a serious threat.
The creators of the One Piece live-action series developed the character Karoo quite far into production before ultimately deciding to cut him from this part of the story. Interestingly, a bakery cart was used as a temporary stand-in for Karoo during filming. They even included dialogue with Vivi mentioning Karoo to acknowledge his presence and importance, ensuring fans knew they hadn’t forgotten about him. They made a point of referencing Karoo, even in a scene with a dinosaur, to show their affection for the character.
Karoo to Debut in Netflix’s One Piece Season 3

When asked about Karoo’s appearance in the upcoming third season, One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta, Tracz assured fans, “He’s in Alabasta.” Tracz also shared how much they’re enjoying filming Season 3, praising the dedication and attention to detail of the entire crew, which leads to lots of hidden Easter eggs – some even originating from the writing team. The team is constantly working to incorporate as much content as possible from Eiichiro Oda’s original manga into the live-action series.
Often, our creative teams – like those responsible for sets, props, and costumes – will suggest incorporating details directly from the original manga. They’ll ask if they can include these elements, and we love that they’re so passionate about the source material. It’s amazing to know we have such dedicated fans who notice and appreciate those little details. It’s not something every show gets, and we’re very grateful for it.
