The Legend of Zelda is beloved for many reasons. Nintendo’s popular action-adventure series consistently delivers fresh and creative gameplay while staying true to its core. A key part of every Zelda game, however, is its dungeons. These mysterious locations offer some of the most engaging experiences, challenging players with puzzles, boss battles, and navigation tests. While all Zelda dungeons present a challenge, a select few are notoriously difficult, truly pushing players to master their skills.
Here are the five toughest dungeons in The Legend of Zelda‘s long history.
5) Water Temple – Ocarina of Time

The Water Temple in Ocarina of Time isn’t really hard—it’s just frustratingly repetitive. Like many players, I found it challenging, but the biggest problem wasn’t the puzzles themselves, it was all the going back and forth.
This dungeon remains challenging enough to be on the list, but it doesn’t quite deserve the number one spot. While many players remember it as incredibly difficult, I think its reputation is a little exaggerated. The Master Quest version is definitely harder, but even then, I wouldn’t place it much higher in terms of overall difficulty.
4) Death Mountain – The Legend of Zelda

Death Mountain is a particularly challenging part of the game. Like many older Zelda titles, it’s difficult because of the sheer number of enemies you face in every area. This is especially true in the final dungeon, which is filled with monsters and culminates in a battle with Ganon.
The biggest challenge in this dungeon isn’t just the enemies—it’s the sheer length. You’ll have to fight your way through over 50 levels to reach the final boss, which can take a long time and really test your patience. It’s a marathon as much as a fight, especially against tricky opponents like the Wizrobes.
3) Trial of the Sword (Master Mode) – Breath of the Wild

The Trial of the Sword isn’t a traditional dungeon, but that’s typical for Breath of the Wild. It’s a challenging series of 54 floors filled with enemies, and completing it fully powers up the Master Sword, making it incredibly powerful.
This challenge is especially tough because you begin with no supplies, forcing you to find everything you need within the dungeon itself. It’s already quite hard on a normal playthrough, but attempting it on Master Mode is incredibly difficult. Successfully completing it without a guide truly earns you the upgraded Master Sword.
2) Eagle’s Tower – Link’s Awakening

Eagle’s Tower is similar to the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time because it requires a lot of going back and forth, and it’s mostly challenging because it’s frustrating. However, I ranked it highly because the source of that frustration is some incredibly clever and devious trap design from the Zelda team.
Okay, so Eagle’s Tower is just packed with puzzles, and a lot of them make you lug stuff around. The problem is, when you’re carrying something, you can’t really fight well, and the developers decided to throw a ton of traps and enemies at you while you’re trying to do that! Honestly, keeping track of everything and not getting totally frustrated is super hard. I ended up having to use a guide just to get through those annoying puzzles, and I’d probably recommend you do the same.
1) Great Palace – Zelda II: The Adventures of Link

As a huge Zelda fan, I always say that Zelda II feels like something totally separate from the rest of the series – it’s just that different. And honestly? It might be the most challenging Zelda game ever made. The side-scrolling battles are seriously tough, and you really have to think about how you’re leveling up your character, or you’ll get stuck and won’t be able to progress.
The Great Palace is notoriously the hardest dungeon in a challenging game. It features the Blue Fokkas, one of the most difficult enemies ever created in the Zelda series. These bird-like soldiers are unique to this dungeon – and for good reason, as they’re incredibly tough. Many Zelda fans found this dungeon to be frustratingly difficult. Luckily, the series has generally become more accessible since then. However, if you’re up for a real Zelda challenge, you can try the Great Palace, but be warned – you probably won’t have fun!
