With the spring 2026 anime season well underway, Netflix has announced its new anime releases for May. Unlike Crunchyroll, which releases all seasonal anime at once, Netflix adds shows throughout the season. While the May list isn’t extensive, Netflix consistently brings in new anime, including popular classics. April was a great month for fans with the arrival of Dandelion from the creator of Gintama and the long-awaited second season of Dorohedoro, six years after its initial release. And May 2026 promises just as much excitement for anime lovers.
Good news for anime fans! The popular action-fantasy series Shangri-La Frontier is coming to Netflix on May 1st, 2026. The first season, which originally aired in October 2023, will be available to stream. While some Asian countries already have access, viewers in the U.S. can also expect Season 2 to be released later this year.
What Is Shangri-La Frontier About?
The anime currently has two seasons, and a third is scheduled to premiere in January 2027. It’s based on a popular action fantasy manga created by Katarina (writer) and Ryosuke Fuji (artist). The manga first appeared in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2020 and became internationally known after the anime adaptation launched in 2023.
The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a high school student with an unusual passion: playing incredibly bad video games. He specifically seeks out games that are glitchy, broken, and notoriously difficult. Known as Sunraku within the small community who share his hobby, his life changes when he decides to try Shangri-La Frontier, a popular and highly-rated virtual reality game that a friend suggested.
Honestly, I was so burned out on awful games, I figured I’d give this one a shot. And it immediately grabbed me! I even did something crazy – I sold almost all my starting equipment just to get some extra cash. I ended up running around with basically nothing but boxers, a bird mask, and a couple of weapons! But it was awesome. It quickly became clear I was going to have to rely on everything I’d learned from all those other games to actually survive.
The anime is now coming to Netflix, but it’s been available on Crunchyroll, Prime Video, and Hulu for a while. The manga currently has 26 volumes, with English translations available for 24 of them. You can find links to buy the manga, both physical and digital copies, on the official Kodansha website. They’ve also announced that Volume 25 will be available digitally on May 26, 2026.
