Jean Grey is consistently ranked among Marvel’s most powerful characters. Born as an incredibly powerful mutant, her abilities became cosmic when she bonded with the Phoenix Force. While well-known for powers like telepathy, moving objects with her mind, resurrection, and controlling fire, Jean possesses many other abilities. Writers often introduce new powers for her, though these aren’t always consistently used. Whether using her natural mutant gifts or the power of the Phoenix Force, Jean has accumulated an extensive range of superpowers, more than many other X-Men.
Jean Grey has some incredibly powerful abilities that are surprisingly rarely used in X-Men stories. They’re so obscure, even many Marvel comic writers have forgotten about them, and you almost never see them in recent issues.
5) Animal Communication

While Aquaman is famous for talking to sea creatures, Jean Grey has demonstrated the ability to communicate with animals too. She notably used this power in Classic X-Men #13 to respond to dolphins being attacked by a shark. Considering Jean is one of the strongest telepaths ever, it’s reasonable to assume she could communicate with animals using her mind. However, this ability hasn’t been featured much, and recent comic writers haven’t mentioned it.
4) Telepathic Camouflage

Jean Grey is incredibly powerful, and she usually doesn’t hold back. But when the X-Men need to be sneaky, she has a special ability that helps them avoid being seen. First shown in Uncanny X-Men #333, Jean used her telepathy to disguise herself and Gambit as government agents, allowing them to secretly enter the Pentagon and uncover Bastion’s plans. Essentially, Jean can use her telepathy to change how people perceive her, making her appear invisible or like someone else entirely. She can even extend this camouflage to others, as demonstrated in that mission. She used the power again in All-New X-Men #13 to infiltrate a secret base, but it’s largely been unused since then.
3) Telekinetic Weapons

Psylocke is known for creating weapons and tools using her psychic powers. Since Jean Grey also possesses powerful telekinetic abilities, it made sense that she would learn to do the same after training with Psylocke. We see her do this only once, in Jean Grey #4, where she creates a hammer to fight with Thor against a group of monsters. Despite the potential of this ability, Jean rarely uses it, likely because she hasn’t had much formal training with weapons. The story writers also seem hesitant to add weapons mastery to her already impressive range of skills.
2) Psychometry

Jean Grey is well-known for reading minds, but she can also get information from objects themselves. This ability, called psychometry, lets her learn about an object’s history simply by touching it or being nearby. She first showed this power in Uncanny X-Men #54 when she used it to figure out who kidnapped Havok and where they’d taken him. This skill makes her a great detective, and she later used it in X-Men #71 to cover up evidence related to Bastion. However, it’s a power that isn’t used very often in X-Men comics.
1) Power Negation

Jean Grey has a remarkably powerful, yet surprisingly rare, ability: she can create mental blocks within a person’s mind to disable their superpowers. This first appeared in X-Men Unlimited #27, where she calmed down Thunderbird when his fire-based powers became uncontrollable. She later used it in X-Men: The Search for Cyclops #4 to remove Apocalypse from Cyclops’ body. Even though she’s demonstrated the ability to suppress even Apocalypse’s immense power, Jean doesn’t often use this skill. This is likely a good thing, as constantly neutralizing villains’ abilities would make her stories less interesting and might even lead to her character being killed off again.
