The latest Pixar and Disney movie is coming to theaters this summer, seven years after the previous one. The film’s official rating was just announced, and it’s a first for the series.
The Motion Picture Association has given Toy Story 5 a PG rating, which is a first for the Toy Story series – all previous films were rated G. It’s unclear why the newest installment received a higher rating, but it suggests Toy Story 5 might have slightly more intense or mature scenes than earlier movies. However, a PG rating still means the film should be suitable for most families, so the changes likely won’t be dramatic.
The Toys Take on Modern Tech in Toy Story 5
The latest installment in the series focuses on how today’s technology is challenging the role of traditional toys. Eight-year-old Bonnie is now captivated by Lilypad, a tablet shaped like a frog, and spends most of her time using it. This leaves toys like Jessie and Buzz Lightyear feeling worried they’re being replaced and are no longer wanted. Woody returns, determined to help children rediscover the joy of playing with toys and prevent them from being forgotten.
Director Andrew Stanton recently explained to Empire that new technology always prevails, even in the context of a potential Toy Story 5. He believes that, ultimately, technology will always be more appealing, making any attempt at competition pointless.
We noticed that when you introduce a screen to a child who’s playing with toys, their attention immediately shifts. We explored that idea and had fun with it in our work. Ultimately, the core issue we wanted to address – represented by the character Lily – is the struggle we all face with technology’s pull in everyday life.
Woody and Buzz Reunite in Toy Story 5
Following a script co-written with Kenna Harris, Stanton was the director of Toy Story 5. The film features voice performances by Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Tony Hale as Forky, Craig Robinson as Atlas, Shelby Rabara as Snappy, Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase, alongside returning cast members John Ratzenberger (Hamm), Wallace Shawn (Rex), Blake Clark (Slinky Dog), Jeff Bergman (Mr. Potato Head), Anna Vocino (Mrs. Potato Head), Bonnie Hunt (Dolly), Ernie Hudson (Combat Carl), Keanu Reeves (Duke Caboom), and Annie Potts (Bo Peep).
The previous Toy Story movies have all been huge successes in theaters, and Toy Story 5 is expected to follow suit. The series has already earned over $3.3 billion around the world, with the third and fourth films each making over $1 billion. The fifth movie could easily bring the total earnings for the franchise above $4 billion.
Toy Story 5 will be on June 19, 2026.
