The Dinobots were the very first group of Autobots introduced in the original Transformers series. Now, two of these classic characters are getting updated toy designs, and fans are excited about the possibility of finally owning them.
Great General Toys has shown off designs for their new action figure, DJS-D03 Blade Calamity, which is based on the classic Generation 1 character Slag/Slug. They’ve also shared images of a prototype for DJS-D01A Tyrannosaurus Warrior, modeled after Grimlock, the Dinobot leader. This new collection of dinosaur-inspired robots features updated designs and a consistent modern detail, promising a powerful and impressive team.
New Images of the Latest Transformers Dinobot Combiner Have Been Revealed

DJS-D03 Blade Calamity transforms into a robotic Triceratops, just like the original G1 Slag/Slug. However, its design looks more like a Zoid figure. The transformation process seems similar – the dinosaur head ends up on the robot’s back. A key difference is the weapon: it’s a bigger blaster that can also be attached to the dinosaur form.
This design is still being developed, but a prototype already exists, though it isn’t painted yet. The robot form shares some similarities with the original Grimlock, particularly the head. Instead of a sword, this version wields a blaster, which also appears on its shoulders in beast mode. Overall, the robot and especially the beast mode have a look and feel inspired by mecha anime.
This Grimlock design takes inspiration from giant monsters seen in anime, like dragons and Godzilla, as well as Zoids. Unlike current scientific understanding of how Tyrannosaurus Rex moved, this version stands fully upright. In robot form, Grimlock reaches about 10 inches tall, setting the size for the other Dinobots.
This new combined form of Volcanicus will be impressively large, with the Grimlock figure making up its head and chest. Early designs show Volcanicus with a wide-open, fierce-looking mouth. While the Dinobots combining into one giant robot has become popular recently, this wasn’t a feature of the original Generation 1 toys.
Since the Slag/Slug figure is just becoming available, we don’t yet know when the toys will be released or if they’ll be released in waves. However, this is a particularly impressive update to the Dinobot characters, and should appeal to fans of mecha anime.
