Over the years, television has given us many memorable shows, but not all of them receive the recognition they deserve. Traditionally, shows competed for viewers within specific time slots on different networks. However, with the rise of streaming, the TV world has changed dramatically. Now, with so many shows readily available, even excellent programs are at risk of being overlooked, simply because there’s so much competition.
As a total film and TV buff, I’ve noticed something lately: so many genuinely great shows just fly under the radar. It’s frustrating! They might not have been huge hits when they originally aired, or maybe they didn’t grab everyone’s attention right away, but that doesn’t make them any less brilliant. I’m going to highlight a few recent shows that I think deserve way more recognition – they’re truly excellent, even if they didn’t get the massive viewership they deserved.
7) Devs (2020)
If you’re looking for a fantastic sci-fi show that flew under the radar, Devs is a standout. The series centers on Lily, a software engineer at a quantum computing firm, who investigates the strange circumstances surrounding her boyfriend’s death. Devs is a gripping and intelligent look at the tech world, tackling big questions about choice and fate, and critics loved it. Unfortunately, it didn’t attract a large audience, which is disappointing given how good it is.
6) The Residence (2025)
The Residence was a promising TV show on Netflix that was unfortunately canceled in 2025 after only one season. It was a funny and mysterious drama centered around a murder within the White House staff. The show featured a fantastic cast, including a standout performance by Uzo Aduba, but it didn’t attract enough viewers for Netflix to continue it.
5) Somebody Somewhere (2022-2024)
Despite a wealth of excellent shows on HBO Max, Somebody Somewhere remains surprisingly underappreciated. The series centers on Sam, a woman who returns to her hometown in her 40s to care for her sister, and explores her journey of reconnecting with family and friends. Though it ran for three seasons before concluding in 2024, this heartwarming and funny show unfortunately never found the widespread audience it deserved.
4) Inside Job (2021-2022)
I was totally blown away by Inside Job, even though it only got one season! It’s a hilarious workplace comedy about the people who secretly run the government and cover up all the conspiracy theories you’ve ever heard. It was seriously sharp and funny, but sadly, not enough people watched it, and Netflix ended up cancelling it after just one season. It’s a real shame, because it’s easily one of the best animated sci-fi shows out there, in my opinion.
3) We Own This City (2022)
While often compared to the acclaimed series The Wire, We Own This City didn’t quite reach the same level of success. This six-part miniseries, starring Jon Bernthal, was based on a true story of corruption within Baltimore’s Gun Trace Task Force. Though the show was a compelling and realistic depiction of these events and did reasonably well, many feel it deserved a wider audience given its high quality.
2) Overcompensating (2025-Present)
Overcompensating is a truly funny TV show that’s come out recently. It centers around Benny, a college freshman who used to be a big athlete in high school, and who is now trying to figure out who he is – including coming to terms with his sexuality, which feels at odds with the tough image he tries to project. The show is a smart and enjoyable take on growing up and exploring identity in today’s world, and it’s a shame more people didn’t see the first season. Luckily, a second season is on the way!
1) Adults (2025-Present)
The first season of Adults didn’t get the attention it deserved, but it’s a genuinely funny and well-made comedy. The show follows a group of friends living together in Queens as they figure out what it means to be adults. It’s a relatable and engaging look at modern life, and many viewers consider it to be as good as some of the best sitcoms on TV. Thankfully, a second season is currently being filmed.
