Netflix has a fantastic fantasy series that stands out as one of the best shows set in a post-apocalyptic world. While popular series like Silo, Fallout, and The Last of Us get a lot of attention, this show is surprisingly unknown despite having already finished airing.

Similar to shows like Silo, Fallout, and The Last of Us, Sweet Tooth creatively adapts its original story, offering a fresh and memorable experience. Premiering in 2021, shortly after the height of the global pandemic, the show felt particularly timely. It gave viewers a way to explore their shared anxieties and fears through a fantastical setting.

Unlike many sci-fi shows on Netflix that end abruptly, Sweet Tooth was able to finish its story satisfyingly over three seasons, bringing everything to a neat conclusion. While it hasn’t always gotten the recognition it deserves, Sweet Tooth is easily one of Netflix’s strongest fantasy series.

But just when you think it’s another dark and depressing take on a post-apocalyptic world, Netflix’s Sweet Tooth offers a glimmer of hope.

The story explores a world where, after a pandemic, children are being born who are part human, part animal – and they may hold the key to the planet’s future. Unlike many dark and gritty shows about the end of the world, Sweet Tooth takes a more hopeful and optimistic approach.

Despite exploring some very dark and intense themes about survival, the show Sweet Tooth manages to stay heartwarming and appropriate for viewers of all ages throughout its three seasons. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, but presents them with sensitivity and control.

Throughout most of the series, we experience the post-apocalyptic world through the eyes of Gus, a naive young boy who appears as a deer. Despite the harsh realities around him pushing him to mature, his loved ones help him hold onto his innocence, which beautifully highlights the show’s central message: even in the darkest times, hope can still be found.

What’s great about Sweet Tooth is that it had the chance to finish its story properly. With so many shows ending abruptly after just a season or two, it’s really satisfying to see a series like this come to a planned and fulfilling conclusion.

Netflix’s Sweet Tooth Arguably Improves Its Source Material

The Netflix series Sweet Tooth is more hopeful and uplifting than its source material. The original comics by Jeff Lemire explore darker themes, showing the extreme lengths people will go to in order to survive. Published under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, the comics have a unique appeal and often bring to mind popular franchises like Mad Max.

I have to say, the Netflix show really takes the story to another level – it’s not just about the violence, but the characters and their humanity. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a dark, post-apocalyptic show as much as anyone. But sometimes, you just need something that shows even when everything is falling apart, a little kindness can still make a difference, and this show really delivers on that.

I absolutely love Sweet Tooth on Netflix! It’s a post-apocalyptic fantasy, but unlike most shows in that genre, it’s actually really hopeful and uplifting. Seriously, almost every episode leaves me feeling good – like things can get better. I really hope more people discover it because it’s special.
