Bank Employee’s $164K Splurge on Family: What’s Next?

In a twist that would make even Bridget Jones blush, a bank insider allegedly siphoned off a small fortune from an elderly customer’s account, then spent it on herself and her relatives. Because nothing says “I’m a responsible adult” like stealing from seniors to fund a family vacation.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has decided to throw the book at Marissa Murillo, who apparently thought her job at Bank of Montreal involved more than just counting money. Over two years, she allegedly took the cash for herself and her family, proving that even in the world of banking, family comes first-unless you’re an elderly customer.

“During the period from January 2023 to November 2024, Respondent made multiple unauthorized debits from an elderly customer’s account for her own personal use and the use of her family members,” the OCC declared, as if this wasn’t the most dramatic plotline since The Sopranos met The Golden Girls.

“As a result of Respondent’s misconduct, the Bank suffered a loss of $164,918,” they added, because nothing says “financial disaster” like losing a sum that could buy a house, a car, and a lifetime supply of avocado toast.

The OCC has now banned Marissa from any banking shenanigans for an indefinite period, which is basically a lifetime in the world of finance. “By reason of the foregoing conduct, Respondent violated the law, which resulted in financial gain to Respondent and a financial loss to the Bank, and involved personal dishonesty,” they concluded, because nothing says “moral high ground” like a 10-page legal document.

Murillo, ever the cooperative employee, has agreed to the ban without admitting or denying her crimes-because why would she, when she’s clearly the victim here?
