To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 10 – originally released on PlayStation 2 in July 2001 – Square Enix has launched a dedicated website and announced a range of new merchandise for fans.
Fans can now pre-order a variety of new merchandise, including a vinyl record set of the original game’s popular soundtrack and collectible figurines and plush toys featuring characters like Tidus, Yuna, Wakka, Lulu, and Auron. The vinyl set includes two discs with most of the game’s iconic music, from intense boss battle themes to the memorable opening track, “To Zanarkand.” It will be available on July 1st for ¥9,350 (approximately $59) through the official Square Enix e-Store.
With Final Fantasy 10, the series jumped to the PlayStation 2, immediately demonstrating the console’s impressive graphical capabilities. Its stunning visuals and cinematic cutscenes were a real highlight. This installment was also the first Final Fantasy game to feature fully 3D environments; previous games like Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 combined 3D characters with static, pre-rendered backgrounds.
Final Fantasy 10 tells the story of Tidus, a famous blitzball player from the city of Zanarkand, who suddenly finds himself in a strange new world called Spira. In Spira, Zanarkand is thought to be a ruined city lost to time. Determined to return home, Tidus joins Yuna, a summoner, on her sacred journey across Spira, where they experience diverse cultures and learn about the monstrous entity known as Sin – a creature that destroyed Tidus’s Zanarkand and continues to threaten the world.
Unlike earlier games in the series, Final Fantasy 10 moved away from fast-paced battles and adopted a traditional turn-based system. It then innovated with the Sphere Grid, a detailed system that let players customize characters by learning new skills and improving their stats.
You can play Final Fantasy 10 on several platforms. An HD version came out for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016, and later for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. Players with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 can play it through backwards compatibility.
Only two years after the release of Final Fantasy 10 in 2001, a sequel called Final Fantasy 10-2 was launched. This game was special because it was the first direct sequel in the main Final Fantasy series. The story continued after the events of Final Fantasy 10, following Yuna, Rikku, and a new character named Paine as they journeyed across Spira, with the possibility of finding Tidus. The gameplay returned to the traditional active-time battle system, and a new job system was introduced using Dress Spheres, allowing the three heroes to change classes and abilities.
