Maul – Shadow Lord Episode 8’s Ending Officially Brings Back Star Wars’ Biggest Failed Movie Story

Season 1, Episode 8 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord revisits a significant plotline from the films that wasn’t fully explored. Because the episode takes place about a year after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, it effectively shows the rise of the Empire and the aftermath of Order 66. It also cleverly sets up events for future stories – for example, Maul’s manipulation of Devon foreshadows his later relationship with Ezra Bridger in Star Wars Rebels. The episode’s ending is a prime example of this skillful storytelling. (Please be aware that spoilers follow.)

Episodes seven and eight largely focus on Maul and Devon evading the Imperial forces, now led by two Inquisitors, who are actively pursuing them. At the same time, the episodes continue to show Maul’s attempt to reclaim his power in the galaxy’s criminal organizations, starting with Janix. Having already removed the Pyke leader, Maul now receives a request for a meeting from Dryden Vos, the head of Crimson Dawn.

Dryden Vos’ Return In Maul – Shadow Lord Sets Up Solo: A Star Wars Story

Dryden Vos appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story as the public face of Crimson Dawn, a powerful crime syndicate expanding across the galaxy. The movie revealed he was betrayed and killed by Qi’ra, who was actually taking orders from Darth Maul. Sadly, Solo wasn’t successful in theaters – it’s the only Star Wars film to be considered a box office failure – and the story was largely left unfinished, though some details about Qi’ra’s past have been explored in other Star Wars media.

The story of Shadow Lord unfolds about eight years before the events in Solo, and directly leads into them with the reappearance of Quinlan Vos. Vos and Darth Maul previously collaborated during Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where Maul led the Shadow Collective. Vos, along with Crimson Dawn and other criminal groups, worked under him until the rise of the Empire forced them into hiding.

It appears Vos kept Crimson Dawn running while Maul was gone, but that’s likely changing. Maul will probably take control of Dawn, using Vos as a figurehead while they secretly rebuild and regain influence across the galaxy. This is a long-term plan, considering the events of Solo, and suggests that this arrangement has been in place for even longer than we previously thought.

With only two episodes left in Season 1, Vos will probably show up in at least one of them. However, the story of Crimson Dawn might get more attention in Season 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord. This could help us understand the organization better and get a clearer sense of what happened before the movie Solo. While it’s not a direct sequel to Solo, it’s great to see that film’s story and characters still matter in the Star Wars universe, even though it didn’t perform well at the box office.

New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+.
