That’s great news! Despite recent trends of companies cutting back, the developers at Pearl Abyss – the creators of Crimson Desert – have been rewarded with significant bonuses and recognition from the South Korean prime minister, thanks to the game’s success.
Kim Min-seok praised the Seoul studio online, stating it’s opening a “new era for Korean entertainment.” He believes this demonstrates that the country’s game industry is capable of growing and succeeding on various platforms, such as consoles.
Following the big hit of Stellar Blade two years ago, Korean game developer Shift Up is now making waves with Crimson Desert. For a long time, the Korean gaming scene has centered around PC and mobile games, but these new releases demonstrate their ability to create successful console games too.
Over the last decade, Korean entertainment – known as K-content – has become incredibly popular worldwide, especially with K-pop music and Korean dramas. Interestingly, even a Western-made movie, Sony’s K-Pop Demon Hunters, has become Netflix’s most successful film ever, and a follow-up movie is already being planned.
To celebrate the success of their popular open-world game – which has sold over five million copies globally – Pearl Abyss is giving all employees a bonus of ₩5 million (around $3,400). This recognizes the team’s dedication and hard work.
As we mentioned during our studio visit last year, around 700 people work at the Seoul location. This investment is a substantial way for the studio to recognize their employees’ hard work.
There’s still discussion about whether Crimson Desert needed more development time before release. While the game has gotten significantly better in the past month, a recent poll showed that 24% of players believe it launched before it was fully complete.
Regardless of the details, Pearl Abyss is clearly thriving, and it’s great to see them investing in their employees instead of resorting to layoffs. We’re excited to see what they accomplish in the future.
